Until now, Claude Cowork was paradoxically modern and old-school at the same time: powerful AI agents, tethered to a single desktop that had to stay awake for anything to run. That model made AI agents feel like fancy macros—useful, but fragile and tied to hardware. Moving Cowork’s work to the cloud means tasks continue running in the background even when users close their laptops or go offline, and scheduled tasks can run without any device online. Tasks keep running in the cloud so users can start work on one device and manage it from another, switching devices at will without losing the thread. One customer success lead describes building a client dashboard on a laptop, then picking the same Cowork session up on a phone while waiting for baggage, with the agent simply “holding the thread.” That is what cross-device task automation should feel like: start a multi-step research project at your desk, approve a data pull from your phone during a meeting, review a draft presentation from a browser at home. Anthropic’s design choice to bring Chat and Cowork into a single workspace on web and desktop is more radical than it looks. Alongside the launch, Anthropic has doubled Cowork usage limits through August 5, signaling that it wants users to push larger, more complex tasks into this new always-on model. There are caveats—existing scheduled tasks remain local until users move them, and desktop is still required for deep integration with local files—but the direction of travel is clear. Background execution is becoming the default, not a power-user hack. As competitors race to ship their own AI agents for everyday business work, the bar is no longer “can your AI write code?” but “can your AI quietly handle the boring office workflows while you live your life, across devices, without thinking about where it is running?”
