With 96Gbps of bandwidth, 4K 240Hz can fit into a single HDMI link without DSC, cutting out a layer of processing between the GPU and the display. The spec also supports 4K 480Hz when using 4:2:0 chroma subsampling and can carry uncompressed RGB 8K 60Hz, plus even more extreme modes when compression is still used, such as 1440p at refresh rates above 1,000Hz. For most people, those extreme numbers are more about future headroom than immediate use, but the key benefit is that HDMI 2.2 sharply reduces the need for compression in realistic 4K and 8K modes, which should help with image clarity, latency, and compatibility.

For gamers, HDMI 2.2 bandwidth means that 4K 240Hz uncompressed becomes achievable on a single cable, making it easier for next-generation GPUs and consoles to drive fast panels without relying heavily on DSC. However, HDMI 2.2 will roll out in tiers: some devices will top out at 64Gbps or 80Gbps instead of the full 96Gbps.
