Not every coping strategy works for every nervous system state, and when you mispair a coping strategy with an activation state, the strategy may not work in the intended way. Overthinking, reassurance-seeking, and compulsive worry are classic examples. They are attempted solutions that become the problem: looping thoughts, replaying events, and seeking reassurance provide short-term relief, but they feed anxiety and train your brain to treat discomfort as intolerable. These behaviors are rituals meant to relieve distress, yet they keep you stuck in obsessive thought loops that never end. This does not make any coping method inherently “good” or “bad”; it means strategies are adaptive when matched to nervous system needs and can become maladaptive when they are not. If you ignore your baseline activation state, you fall into the trap of using solutions that quietly perpetuate the original problem.

Matching Stress Relief Techniques to Your Nervous System

Behavioral change works best when it aligns with nervous system physiology, not against it. For hyperarousal—anxiety, racing thoughts, feeling keyed up—your goal is to decrease activation and help your body recognize that it is safe enough to slow down. Helpful strategies include reducing sensory stimulation by sitting in a quiet, dimly lit room, practicing paced breathing with a longer exhale than inhale, progressive muscle relaxation, breaking overwhelming tasks into smaller steps, limiting stimulants like caffeine, and using brief cold exposure such as splashing cold water on your face or applying an ice pack. For hypoarousal—numbness, dissociation, fatigue—your goal is to gently increase activation. Helpful strategies include engaging in physical activity, stepping outside for fresh air or sunlight, using sensory stimulation such as textured objects or pleasant scents, 5-4-3-2-1 grounding, connecting with trusted people, and playing music that boosts your energy. Loud, energizing music or exercise can help a fatigued, shut-down body but feel overstimulating to an already activated one.

A Practical Rule: Treat Your Nervous System, Not Your Thoughts

Most stress advice targets your thoughts—reframe, analyze, problem-solve. Yet productive problem-solving has a beginning, middle, and end; obsessive looping has no end and grows the very distress you are trying to escape. Coping strategies are not one-size-fits-all; the key is choosing ones that match whether your nervous system is under- or over-activated. Before you reach for your go-to stress relief technique, pause and ask: Am I sped up or shut down? If you are keyed up, prioritize calming and grounding. If you are numb or frozen, prioritize activation and connection. Learning to recognize the direction of your nervous system shifts lets you respond more intentionally rather than automatically, and once you know your direction of activation it is easier to identify strategies that support the movement back into your window of tolerance. In short, stop chasing universal coping tips and start treating the actual physiology that is driving your distress.
