Through the metaphor of gardening, the inner self is treated not as something to fix, but as something to cultivate over time, turning self-care into a patient, continuous and personal practice. Many planners still treat green spaces as optional, developers treat daylight as a luxury, and product designers treat mood as something to gamify. That mindset has to go. Once we accept that design shapes stress hormones and recovery, every window, bench and interface becomes a health decision.
So what should change? Cities should classify urban green spaces as core mental health infrastructure, not leftover land. Housing standards should treat indoor air quality, noise levels and daylight access as non-negotiable basics, not nice extras. Residents and workers can begin to read spaces through a wellbeing lens: Does this room let me breathe, move and rest my attention? Does this park invite gentle movement and quiet reflection? Does this device help me notice and regulate my inner state, or distract me from it?
Design will not replace therapy or policy, but it does something subtler and pervasive: it sets the background conditions in which anxiety either spikes or softens. Our built environment is our third skin, our streets are shared nervous systems, and our objects are turning into emotional interfaces.
