NAND that does not go to data centers is expected to be reserved for higher-end products to offset lower unit shipments, leaving budget and mid-range SSD segments especially exposed.
Why OEMs are raiding the consumer SSD channel
In the past, PC makers sourced NAND and SSDs directly from memory manufacturers under stable contracts. That model has broken down because the same suppliers now prioritize AI data centers. With their usual supply lines squeezed, OEMs are turning to SSD module makers and controller vendors that once focused on retail products. Silicon Motion says its controllers, previously common in drives bought by end users, now mostly ship to companies such as Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Asus. This shift helps keep pre-built PCs, laptops, and smartphones in stock, but it drains what little inventory would have reached retailers. The result is an SSD market collapse on the consumer side: shelves that used to carry diverse brands and capacities now show fewer models, sporadic availability, and more frequent stockouts for popular NVMe drives.

With NAND supply expected to worsen in 2027 and experts warning shortages could continue into 2028, PC builders need to adjust their plans. Silicon Motion’s Nelson Duann does not expect meaningful relief in the second half of this year, and NAND makers remain pessimistic about future capacity versus AI demand. For many users, pre-built PCs or component bundles may now be cheaper paths to storage, because OEMs enjoy preferential access to SSDs that retail buyers cannot match. Builders planning upgrades should buy early rather than wait for sales that might not come, and they should consider slightly smaller or slower models if their preferred drives are unavailable. Above all, the storage supply crisis means treating SSD purchases as strategic decisions: prioritizing reliability, verified sellers, and realistic capacities instead of chasing the lowest headline price.
