How AI data centers triggered a NAND supply shortage
At the core of the consumer SSD shortage is a NAND supply shortage driven by AI data center demand. Hyperscale cloud and AI operators need vast amounts of fast storage to feed GPU clusters, so memory and storage manufacturers are prioritising these large, long-term orders. According to reports relayed by Silicon Motion, most DRAM and NAND currently goes toward AI data centers, and that has starved consumer products that depend on the same chips. Before this surge, PC OEMs could reliably buy NAND straight from memory makers. When NAND from primary memory vendors became hard to secure, OEMs adapted by turning to the same module makers and controller suppliers that typically serve the SSD retail market. Silicon Motion’s controllers, which once powered drives sold directly to consumers under brands like Samsung or Western Digital, now mostly ship to large PC and laptop manufacturers such as Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Asus instead. This shift keeps shipments of PCs, laptops, and smartphones relatively stable, but it diverts inventory away from standalone SSDs in retail channels. The result is fewer models, less frequent restocks, and sharp price increases on what remains. Some PC and laptop makers have raised their system prices by as much as 40%, while many NVMe SSDs have seen their prices more than double, reinforcing the pull toward pre-built systems and bundles.
Why standalone SSD upgrades are getting harder and riskier
For enthusiasts and upgraders, the SSD retail market collapse shows up as sticker shock and shrinking choice. Models that used to sit in the mainstream sweet spot disappear, leaving either budget drives with compromises or premium models with inflated prices. Scarcity has also attracted scammers, who are selling fake SSDs that can even fool some benchmark tools, forcing buyers to double-check sellers and test drives more carefully. With NAND supply expected to tighten further in 2027, remaining retail stock will likely concentrate in higher-end products where manufacturers can offset lower unit shipments, making simple, cost-effective SSD upgrades much harder to plan and justify.
