For shoppers, that means fewer choices, more frequent stockouts, and rising prices on everything from standalone NVMe drives to full systems and game consoles. The shortage is not a brief hiccup: suppliers warn that the imbalance between AI data center demand and consumer SSD supply is likely to persist for years.

How AI data center demand hijacked NAND supply
AI data center demand is now the dominant force in flash storage, pulling DRAM and NAND away from traditional consumer products. Cloud service providers building GPU-heavy AI clusters need enormous pools of high-speed SSDs for model training, inference, and data staging. According to Tom’s Hardware’s interview with Nelson Duann, most DRAM and NAND currently goes toward AI data centers, leaving consumer devices starved. Memory makers naturally prioritize the largest buyers with long contracts, so module manufacturers and controller vendors send more output to data center and OEM orders instead of retail. This structural shift explains why the consumer SSD shortage has appeared so suddenly: as soon as hyperscale AI projects ramped up, the leftover capacity that once fed retail channels nearly vanished, turning what used to be a buyer’s market for SSDs into a seller’s market powered by AI infrastructure.
OEMs now compete for the same SSDs as enthusiasts
Before the NAND squeeze, big PC makers like HP, Dell, Lenovo, and Asus could buy NAND directly from memory manufacturers and have stable SSD supply for their systems. That pathway has broken down under AI data center demand, forcing OEMs to tap the same module makers and controller vendors that normally serve retail. Duann explains that the SSD controllers Silicon Motion once saw inside drives on store shelves now mostly end up in OEM devices. This redirection stabilizes supply for pre-built PCs, laptops, and smartphones, but it drains what little remains for standalone drives. For consumers, the result is paradoxical: a complete system may still be findable at a semi-reasonable storage cost, while buying a retail NVMe or SATA SSD on its own feels like competing with OEMs for scraps in a shrinking pool of inventory.
Rising prices, fake SSDs, and a collapsing retail channel
As the consumer SSD shortage has deepened, prices across memory and storage products have climbed. Reports note that some PC and laptop makers have raised their prices by as much as 40%, while many NVMe SSDs have seen prices more than double. Kioxia has even warned about the extinction of the once-common $50 1TB SSD. With fewer legitimate drives and higher prices, scammers are exploiting desperate buyers by selling fake SSDs that can fool benchmark tools but fail under real use. Meanwhile, module makers and NAND suppliers are steering limited non–data center capacity toward higher-end products to maintain revenue, which further limits affordable options. This combination of price spikes, deceptive products, and dwindling stock is shrinking the retail SSD market from both ends: honest sellers struggle to secure inventory, and cautious shoppers hesitate to upgrade.
What PC builders should expect through 2027 and beyond
For PC builders and upgraders, the NAND supply crisis is less a short shock and more a long squeeze. Duann expects current conditions to continue through the second half of the year, and NAND makers are “quite pessimistic” about the outlook. They told Silicon Motion that supply constraints will worsen in 2027 as cloud service providers and data center operators keep increasing demand, with some experts warning shortages could drag into 2028. In practice, that means longer wait times for SSD restocks, unpredictable price swings, and fewer true bargains on storage-heavy builds. Enthusiasts may find that pre-built PCs, bundles, or partial upgrades offer better value than buying individual SSDs. Planning ahead—waiting for genuine discounts, avoiding gray-market drives, and prioritizing reliability over capacity—will be key survival strategies while AI infrastructure continues to absorb most of the world’s NAND.
