Your Carrier Is Tracking Your Location—Here’s the iPhone Setting That Can Limit It

Why Carrier Location Tracking Matters for Your Privacy

Your phone’s location data powers navigation, ride-hailing, food delivery, and family tracking—but it also feeds a vast data ecosystem you rarely see. Beyond apps, your mobile carrier can track where your device connects to the network and build a detailed picture of your movements. Regulators have already penalized major providers for sharing and selling this kind of data, highlighting how sensitive carrier location tracking can be. Unlike normal app permissions, you can’t simply delete your carrier. Your SIM (or eSIM) must talk to the network, and that inherently reveals something about your location. However, recent iPhone privacy settings give you more control over how precisely your carrier can pinpoint you. Apple’s newer tools don’t turn off tracking completely, but they can blur your exact position down to a neighborhood-level view instead of a precise street address, which is a significant privacy improvement.

How iPhone Location Permissions Normally Work

Before you change carrier-specific controls, it helps to understand standard iPhone privacy settings. On iOS, most location decisions happen per app. Open Settings, tap Privacy & Security, then Location Services to see every app that can access your location. Each one offers four options: Never, Ask Next Time or When I Share, While Using the App (or Widgets), and Always. These choices decide when apps can request your position, but not how accurate it is. A small arrow icon next to each app name shows which ones are using location most often—a purple arrow means recent access, while a gray arrow means your data was used in the last 24 hours. Reviewing this list is a quick way to spot apps that may be over-collecting your data. Adjusting these options lets you disable location sharing where it isn’t needed and limit background tracking by overly intrusive apps.

Step-by-Step: Limit Precise Location Sharing With Your Carrier

Apple added a new option in iOS 26.3 called Limit Precise Location that’s aimed specifically at carrier tracking on iPhone. When enabled, it reduces how accurately your cellular provider can locate your device, shifting from pinpoint coordinates to a more approximate area. To try it, first make sure your iPhone is updated to iOS 26.3 or later. Then open Settings, go to Privacy & Security, and look in Location-related options for Limit Precise Location. If you see the toggle, turn it on. Apple explains that with this setting active, cellular networks may only determine a broader neighborhood-level location instead of an exact address. This control is designed so it does not affect signal quality, emergency location sharing with first responders, or features like Find My. It simply restricts extra precision that would otherwise be available to your carrier via the modem and network signaling.

Device and Carrier Support: The Big Catch

There is an important limitation: Limit Precise Location only works if both your iPhone hardware and your carrier support it. Apple currently restricts the feature to devices using its C1 or C1X modem, such as the iPhone Air, iPhone 16e, and the cellular version of the iPad Pro M5. Older or different models will not show the option at all. Even with a compatible device, your network must opt in. Apple notes that only certain carriers have enabled the feature so far. In the US, Boost Mobile supports it, with several additional providers in Europe and Asia also on board. If your carrier hasn’t implemented it yet, you will not see the Limit Precise Location toggle. If the option is missing, contact your carrier’s support channel to ask whether they plan to support reduced-precision carrier location tracking on iPhone and when it might become available.

More Ways to Tighten iPhone Location and System Services

Even if your device or carrier doesn’t support Limit Precise Location yet, you can still significantly improve privacy by refining other iPhone settings. Return to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and systematically audit each app. Disable location for services that clearly don’t need it, and choose While Using the App instead of Always wherever possible to reduce silent background tracking. You can also control how accurate app-level tracking is. Open an app in the Location Services list and look for the Precise Location toggle. Turning this off means the app will only see your approximate position, which is typically enough for weather apps, shopping, or content recommendations. For deeper control, scroll to the bottom of Location Services and tap System Services. Here, you can switch off individual background features, such as cell network diagnostics or other system-level location uses, to further minimize unnecessary data sharing.
