How to Stop Your Carrier From Tracking Your Exact Location on iPhone

How to Stop Your Carrier From Tracking Your Exact Location on iPhone

Why Your Carrier Can See Your Exact Location

Location tracking keeps maps, ride-hailing, and social apps working smoothly, but it also opens the door to carrier tracking on iPhone. Mobile networks naturally log which towers your device connects to, and that data can be used to pinpoint where you are—sometimes down to a street or building. Regulators have already fined major carriers for mishandling or selling this kind of location data, which makes iPhone location privacy a serious concern. By default, your carrier can access highly accurate information about your movements, separate from any apps you install. Even if you lock down app permissions, your network provider may still know exactly where your phone is. To address this, Apple introduced a new privacy control called Limit Precise Location, designed specifically to reduce how accurately your carrier can track your device, without breaking connectivity or emergency services.

Understanding Limit Precise Location and Device Support

Limit Precise Location is a system-level setting that restricts how much location detail your iPhone shares with your cellular network. When it’s enabled, your carrier may only be able to infer a rough area—such as your neighborhood—rather than your exact street address. Importantly, Apple says this does not affect your signal quality, app performance, or the precise location data sent to emergency responders. However, Limit Precise Location has hardware and carrier requirements. It relies on Apple’s C1 or C1X cellular modems, currently found in select devices such as the iPhone Air, iPhone 16e, iPhone 17e, and the cellular version of the M5 iPad Pro. Even if you have a compatible device, your carrier must also support the feature. At the moment, support is limited, so you’ll need to check both your device model and your mobile operator before relying on this privacy control.

How to Turn On Limit Precise Location on iPhone

If your device and carrier are compatible, you can enable Limit Precise Location directly in your iPhone privacy settings. Open the Settings app, then tap Cellular. Next, choose Cellular Data Options. In this menu, look for Limit Precise Location and toggle it on. Once activated, your carrier tracking on iPhone becomes less accurate, reducing the level of detail they can infer about your movements while keeping your connection stable. This setting operates independently of app-level location permissions. Apps like Maps, Uber, or Find My can still use precise GPS information as you’ve configured under Location Services. Limit Precise Location only affects what the cellular network itself can see. If you switch SIMs or carriers—whether physical or eSIM—you may need to revisit this menu, as support depends on the specific operator providing your mobile service.

Tighten App Permissions and System Location Services

Limit Precise Location is one piece of the iPhone location privacy puzzle. You should also review which apps can access your location and how often they do so. Go to Settings, then Privacy & Security, and tap Location Services. Here, select each app and choose from Never, Ask Next Time or When I Share, While Using the App, or Always, depending on how much access is truly necessary. You can also disable the Precise Location toggle per app so they only see your approximate area. To further reduce background tracking, scroll to the bottom of the Location Services page and tap System Services. You’ll see options such as Cell Network Search, Networking & Wireless, iPhone Analytics, and more. Many of these can be turned off without affecting basic functionality, especially if you’re focused on privacy over analytics. For extra transparency, enable Status Bar Icon so your iPhone shows an indicator whenever system services use your location.
