How to Block Your Carrier From Tracking Your Location on iPhone

How to Block Your Carrier From Tracking Your Location on iPhone

What Carrier Location Tracking Is and Why It Matters

Carrier location tracking relies on your phone’s connection to nearby cell towers to pinpoint where you are. Unlike apps that use GPS and Wi‑Fi, this tracking happens at the network level, meaning your carrier can often see a very precise record of your movements. That data can be used to provide services, but it has also raised serious privacy concerns, including fines for carriers that shared or sold location data without proper consent. If you care about tightening your iPhone privacy settings, you need to control not only apps, but also how much information your mobile network can infer about your exact position. Apple now offers tools that let you reduce the precision of location information exposed to the carrier, helping you disable carrier tracking as much as your hardware and provider allow, while still keeping your phone usable.

Check Your iPhone and Carrier Compatibility First

Apple’s carrier location tracking limit is not available on every iPhone. The feature, called Limit Precise Location, was introduced in iOS 26.3 and currently works only on devices with Apple’s C1 or C1X modem, such as the iPhone Air, iPhone 16e, and the cellular version of the iPad Pro M5. Even with a supported device and software, your mobile provider also has to support the feature; otherwise, the option simply won’t appear in your settings. Some carriers have already enabled it, while others are still catching up. Before you try to disable carrier tracking, update to the latest version of iOS, confirm your device model, and be aware that availability depends on your network. If you don’t see the setting described in the next section, it likely means your hardware or carrier does not yet support this level of location sharing control.

How to Limit Carrier Location Tracking on Your iPhone

To turn on Apple’s carrier location-sharing limit, start in the Settings app. First, ensure Location Services are enabled under Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services, since the new control appears only when core location features are active. Then look for the Limit Precise Location option related to your cellular network; on supported devices and carriers, you’ll see a setting that explains it restricts how much information is shared with cellular networks. Toggle this on to disable precise carrier tracking. With this enabled, Apple says your provider should only be able to determine a rough area, such as your neighborhood, instead of an exact address. This change happens at the modem level, so it doesn’t affect your normal app-by-app location choices, which you can continue to customize for each app under the same Location Services menu.

Adjust App and System Location Settings for Extra Privacy

Limiting carrier location tracking is one layer of protection; you should also refine location sharing on iPhone for apps and system services. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and review each app. Choose Never, Ask Next Time or When I Share, While Using the App, or Always, depending on how much access it truly needs. You can also disable Precise Location for individual apps so they only see your approximate position, which is often enough for weather or basic search. At the bottom of the list, tap System Services to see additional items that use location in the background, such as network-related and calibration features, and toggle off those you don’t want. Combining app controls, system-service limits, and Limit Precise Location gives you much tighter overall location privacy without completely sacrificing convenience.

Privacy Trade-Offs and How to Confirm It’s Working

When you reduce carrier location tracking, your provider should only see an approximate area rather than a pinpointed address. According to Apple, this setting does not affect your signal quality, location sharing with first responders, or services like Find My, which is crucial for safety and lost-device recovery. However, there may be trade-offs: some carrier-specific features that rely on extremely precise network location could behave differently or become less accurate. To verify your broader location settings are under control, look for the arrow icons next to apps under Location Services: a purple arrow indicates recent location use, while a gray arrow shows access within the last 24 hours. If you have a supported device and carrier and have turned on Limit Precise Location, you can be confident that your network sees less granular data than before, even though apps may still use GPS as you allow.
