How Apple’s Gemini Partnership Shapes, But Doesn’t Define, Siri
Apple’s Gemini partnership lives behind the scenes, shaping Siri’s intelligence without turning it into a Gemini clone. According to PCMag’s briefing coverage, Siri AI runs on a family of five Apple Foundation Models (AFM Core, AFM Core Advanced, AFM Cloud, AFM Cloud Image, and AFM Cloud Pro) rather than Google’s Gemini Flash, Pro, or image models. Federighi stated, “We use none of the models that Google deploys to their customers,” and added that Apple does not use Google Search or Google Assistant. Instead, Google’s role lies in training: Amar Subramanya explained that Apple trains AFMs with reinforcement learning and then refines them using outputs from Gemini frontier models. Gemini is a teacher, not a runtime dependency. Apple even scales its Private Cloud Compute using Nvidia GPUs in Google’s cloud, while keeping user data locked inside Apple’s audited, privacy-focused infrastructure.
On-Device Intelligence and the System Orchestrator
The most important difference from a standard cloud AI is Siri’s on-device intelligence and orchestration layer. Apple’s AFM Core and AFM Core Advanced models run directly on Apple Silicon, handling lightweight queries, fast dictation, and new expressive voice features without leaving the device. Above them sits a “system orchestrator,” which evaluates each request and decides whether the phone, tablet, or Mac can handle it locally or needs AFM Cloud, AFM Cloud Image, or AFM Cloud Pro. PCMag compares this to police officers calling for backup: the system sizes up the job before escalating. When a request does go to the cloud, it flows through Private Cloud Compute, which Apple describes as extending the iPhone’s privacy promise to the server side by limiting who can see data and how long it is retained, while still giving Siri access to heavy compute.

Where Google’s Gemini app behaves like a powerful but detached chatbot, Apple wants Siri to become a personal context assistant tied to everything on the device. The new standalone Siri app is only part of the story; deeper OS integration means Siri can understand notifications, documents, media, and app states in a way generic cloud tools cannot. Apple’s “Assistant experience” is wired into the operating system through the system orchestrator, which coordinates personal content, on-device models, and, when necessary, Private Cloud Compute. This design lets Siri react to what you are doing rather than waiting for open-ended prompts.
