What the New Siri AI Actually Is
The new Siri AI is a rebuilt, system-level assistant that blends on-device AI intelligence, private cloud models, and deep OS integration to act as a personal context AI assistant rather than a generic chatbot. Apple tore down the old, mostly voice-driven Siri and replaced it with an assistant driven by Apple Intelligence and Apple Foundation Models that live from the iPhone’s silicon up to Private Cloud Compute. This shift moves Siri beyond being a thin voice layer on top of web search or third-party bots. Instead of routing every hard question to an external service, the assistant now interprets intent, checks personal data where appropriate, picks the right on-device or cloud model, and responds with awareness of apps, notifications, and content spread across iOS 27 and the wider Apple ecosystem.

Inside Apple’s AFM Stack and System Orchestrator
Under the hood, the new Siri AI capabilities come from a family of Apple Foundation Models tuned for Apple Silicon and split across device and cloud. AFM Core handles lightweight requests locally, while AFM Core Advanced adds multimodal powers such as fast dictation and Siri’s expressive voice. For complex tasks or creative work like image generation and editing, AFM Cloud, AFM Cloud Image, and AFM Cloud Pro sit on Apple’s Private Cloud Compute infrastructure. A “system orchestrator” decides which model should respond, much like a dispatcher choosing whether a case needs local officers or specialist backup. According to PCMag’s briefing coverage, this orchestrator weighs complexity, latency, and privacy before sending anything to the cloud. When it does, Apple says data remains encrypted and opaque even to its own staff, extending the iPhone’s privacy model into its server environment.
Gemini as Teacher, Not Twin
Apple’s Gemini partnership has led many to assume Siri would become a Gemini skin, but Apple’s leadership describes a different reality. Craig Federighi was explicit that “we use none of the models that Google deploys to their customers,” and that the amount of Google Assistant used is “none.” Instead, Gemini’s role sits upstream in training. Apple’s AI chief Amar Subramanya explains that AFMs were trained with reinforcement learning and refined using outputs from Gemini’s frontier models. In other words, Gemini acted like a highly skilled tutor during training, not a runtime engine inside iOS. Apple also uses Nvidia GPUs in Google’s cloud to scale its Private Cloud Compute training runs without handing over user data or adopting Google’s deployment stack. The result is an Apple Gemini partnership that sharpens Siri’s world knowledge while preserving Apple’s control over models, infrastructure, and privacy guarantees.
From Voice Assistant to First-Class App
In iOS 27, Siri steps out of the background and into a dedicated app, signaling its promotion from utility to flagship feature. The assistant is no longer only summoned by a wake phrase; it becomes a persistent, visual hub for new Siri AI capabilities such as multimodal understanding, expressive responses, and richer follow-up interactions. Deep OS hooks allow it to read on-screen content (with permission), interpret images, and coordinate actions across apps without sending everything to the cloud. This visual intelligence means Siri can work as both a conversational partner and a control panel for workflows spanning Messages, Mail, Photos, and third-party tools. Apple is positioning this app as the primary way users interact with Apple Intelligence, instead of treating Siri as an opening act that hands off to Gemini or ChatGPT when questions get hard.
Personal Context and Privacy as Differentiators
Apple’s biggest bet is that a personal context AI assistant, rooted in on-device AI intelligence, will feel more trustworthy and useful than a generic cloud chatbot. Siri’s system orchestrator has direct access to local signals such as calendar events, messages, documents, and app state, and can combine them with AFM Core models to answer questions in context. When tasks exceed local capacity, Private Cloud Compute extends this intelligence without turning Siri into a thin client for Google Search or Gemini. Federighi has stressed that Siri uses Apple’s own world knowledge service instead of Google Search, which helps Apple keep tight control over data paths and ranking logic. By rebuilding Siri as a tightly integrated layer of iOS 27, Apple is betting that deep context plus privacy-first design will be harder to copy than another AI chatbot interface.
