Claude Code as a one-stop workspace, not just an AI coding assistant
Claude Code is an AI-powered file workspace where you point the assistant at a local folder and it can read, write, reorganize, and structure everything inside, turning that folder into a flexible alternative to multiple separate productivity apps and subscriptions. CLAUDE.md, Skills, and seamless links into Obsidian and NotebookLM
Claude Code workflows are opinionated, not magical: they lean on clear rules written into a CLAUDE.md file at the root of each folder, which describes what lives there and how it should be handled. Claude reads those rules and can then apply Skills—saved workflows stored as SKILL.md files in a .claude/skills directory that run when their description matches the user’s request. This is where integration with existing developer tools matters. One developer’s Obsidian vault is local, so Claude Code can drop notes straight into it and even edit YAML frontmatter across multiple files, effectively organizing the vault. Another keeps a dedicated NotebookLM sources folder synced through a cloud drive; Claude Code populates and cleans that folder while the sync handles the upload. For NotebookLM, sources are prefixed into categories like REF, DATA, BG, STUDY, DRAFT, and JUNK, turning what used to be a junk drawer of files into a system that makes toggling sources fast and predictable.

Why individual developers are ready to ditch SaaS suites
The underlying trigger for many of these Claude Code workflow stories is frustration with scattered information and rigid SaaS tools. One developer realized their research mess was partly self-inflicted, with unstructured files thrown into NotebookLM until source names stopped being recognizable seconds after upload; prefix rules solved this once Claude Code took over the boring organization work. Another avoided Claude Code because it was marketed as a developer tool, only to find that file access opened a wider productivity space that mattered more than terminals and scripts. When your assistant can read what is inside screenshots, categorize them by software, and move or rename them according to folder rules, even low-level maintenance work starts to feel integrated instead of scattered.
