Reddit user Jibril-sama has taken the Steam paradox—owning hundreds of games that feel like they exist nowhere—and solved it with a delightfully unnecessary piece of hardware poetry. They bought a stack of used 2.5-inch SSDs for around €7 each, then turned them into individual SSD “cartridges” for single games. Each drive carries its own title and custom box art, transforming a bland list of icons into a colorful shelf of DIY game cartridges. It is impractical, a bit absurd, and exactly the kind of physical flourish PC gaming has been missing as the industry sprints toward an all-digital future.

How the SSD Cartridge Conversion Works
At a technical level, this SSD cartridge conversion is simple, and that simplicity is what makes it so compelling. Each 2.5-inch drive is preloaded with a single Steam game and labeled with cover art, so the cartridge is both storage and display piece. Sony’s plan to halt PlayStation disc production in 2028 has pushed the anxiety around physical ownership back into the spotlight, and its broader move away from discs has fueled debate over what we lose when plastic disappears. The design also shows how little is required to restore some sense of ownership in digital spaces.
