It also adds Actually Smart Summon to Cybertruck, letting the vehicle drive itself to a chosen point in a parking area with no one inside. These steady improvements turn Tesla FSD into a fast-evolving benchmark that any Tesla FSD competitor must match on both capability and update pace.
Rivian’s Supervised Self-Driving Launch Plan
Rivian is preparing a supervised self-driving system that CEO RJ Scaringe directly compares to Tesla FSD, signaling a move into head-on competition. During a recent event, Scaringe said the company will roll out “full supervised point-to-point” driving later this year for its second-generation vehicles and the new R2. This autonomous vehicle software is intended to handle trips from one destination to another under supervision, a major step beyond Rivian’s current Universal Hands-Free system, which is limited to about 3.5 million miles of clearly marked roads and does not deal with turns, traffic lights, or parking areas. If Rivian delivers on this timeline, it would advance its ADAS stack to near-FSD levels within roughly a year of Universal Hands-Free reaching customers, compressing a learning curve that took Tesla many product cycles to climb.

Hands-Off Driving Technology and the 2027 Milestone Race
The rivalry is not only about supervised self-driving today but also about who reaches hands-off driving technology at meaningful scale. Rivian has outlined a path from this year’s supervised release to unsupervised, hands-free, eyes-off capability, with Scaringe saying that unsupervised self-driving will arrive next year and targeting broad hands-free operation by 2027.
