Defining the New Race in Supervised Autonomous Driving
Rivian self-driving and Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) represent competing supervised autonomous driving systems designed to handle point-to-point trips while a human driver remains responsible, and their progress marks a major step toward hands-free, eyes-off driving where cars manage steering, speed, and complex road situations under software control. Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe has set expectations for a supervised point-to-point system to arrive on the company’s second-generation vehicles and R2 later this year, while Tesla continues to evolve FSD (Supervised) through frequent over-the-air updates. Both companies still frame their technology as driver assistance, not full autonomy, yet each is racing to claim leadership in the next phase: supervised systems that can later transition into unsupervised robotaxi use. The result is a software contest where training data, update cadence, and safety performance may decide who reaches reliable hands-free driving first.
Rivian’s Roadmap: From Universal Hands-Free to Eyes-Off
Rivian’s current Universal Hands-Free (UHF) system is an advanced driver-assistance feature that can handle steering and speed on about 3.5 million miles of clearly marked roads in the US and Canada, but it cannot yet manage turns, traffic lights, or parking lots. Scaringe now says Rivian will release “full supervised point-to-point” driving later this year, bringing capability closer to Tesla FSD by allowing an R2 or second-generation model to drive from one destination to another under supervision. Last December, Rivian outlined plans for fully autonomous driving that would support hands-free, eyes-off operation and robotaxi services. Tesla FSD’s Incremental March with v14.3.4
Tesla FSD (Supervised) v14.3.4, delivered via the 2026.14.6.10 software update, is the latest example of Tesla’s incremental approach to autonomy. The update introduces “Actually Smart Summon” on the Cybertruck, allowing the vehicle to steer itself through parking lots or driveways to a chosen spot with no one inside while avoiding obstacles. Tesla reports upgrades to the reinforcement learning stage of FSD training, a new neural network vision encoder for rare and low-visibility conditions, and a rewritten AI compiler and runtime using MLIR that cuts reaction time by about 20%. The unified model now spans Smart Summon, FSD, and Robotaxi behavior, bringing more consistent driving. FSD (Supervised) v14.3.4 also improves handling of small animals, temporary system degradations, and complex traffic lights, while refining driver monitoring to enforce attentive supervision as the software becomes more capable.
Different Strategies: Phased Rollout vs Continuous Deployment
Rivian and Tesla are targeting similar outcomes but using different software strategies. Rivian has outlined a clear phased roadmap: expand from UHF to supervised point-to-point later this year, then push toward hands-free, eyes-off driving and unsupervised self-driving in the following years, including applications in robotaxi fleets. This staged plan emphasizes distinct capability milestones. Tesla, in contrast, relies on continuous deployment. FSD (Supervised) v14.3.4 is one node in a long chain of frequent over-the-air releases that refine perception, control, and driver monitoring without a single “big bang” launch. According to The Tech Outlook, FSD (Supervised) v14.3.4 ships to multiple models including S, 3, X, Y, and Cybertruck, and is already present in a wide set of markets. The competitive question is whether Rivian’s more defined phases can catch up to Tesla’s vast data-driven iteration in supervised autonomous driving.

Both Rivian and Tesla frame hands-free, eyes-off driving as the next big milestone beyond current supervised autonomy. Rivian’s commitment to hands-free driving 2027, supported by its December announcement on fully autonomous technology and its Uber robotaxi deal, signals confidence that it can compress years of development into a short timeline. Tesla, meanwhile, continues to refine FSD (Supervised) toward increasingly capable behavior, backed by upgrades in reinforcement learning, vision, and driver monitoring that move its system closer to handling more driving without frequent disengagements. The Tesla FSD competition now hinges on how safely and reliably each company can expand from supervised point-to-point to unsupervised operation.
