According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Eddy Cue warned that AI could disrupt the iPhone business within a decade, pushing leadership to admit that Apple’s AI culture and structure were not working. Tim Cook had already lost confidence in AI chief John Giannandrea, and internal voices like Mike Rockwell and former hardware head Dan Riccio had been raising alarms that AI might threaten Apple’s entire product line. From Vision Pro Team to Systemwide Siri AI Overhaul
Once Mike Rockwell, the executive behind Vision Pro and visionOS, took over Siri under Federighi, Apple reshaped the assistant’s leadership and technology stack. Rockwell brought in the team that had built visionOS to drive Siri AI improvements, while Giannandrea lost most responsibilities and later left. Apple also recruited former Google and Microsoft executive Amar Subramanya to run AI models and research, signaling that Siri AI would be treated as a core platform, not a side project. Rockwell, Federighi, and Cue struck a key deal with Google to replace Siri’s legacy backend with Gemini models hosted on Google Cloud. At the same time, Tim Cook became unusually hands-on, pushing teams to move faster after generative AI had caught Apple off guard when ChatGPT appeared in 2022. The result is one of Apple’s most significant AI assistant updates in years.
How Siri AI Works Across iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and visionOS
Siri AI now runs across iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, and visionOS 27, blending on-device models with Apple’s Private Cloud Compute. On supported hardware, the on-device Siri AI model brings more expressive, customizable voices and a “major boost in accuracy with systemwide dictation”, including automatic punctuation and formatting. The assistant can pull from personal context in messages, email, photos, and other apps, and Apple says this will extend to third-party apps that hook into Spotlight. Visual Intelligence lets Siri answer questions about what is on your screen, search visually, and act immediately, including a camera mode on iOS that can explain scenes, help split a bill with Apple Cash, or give nutritional insights about a plate of food. All Siri AI conversations sync via iCloud so the Apple AI assistant feels consistent regardless of which device you start on.
Writing Tools, Image Generation, and the Road Ahead
Beyond voice and search, Siri AI adds systemwide Writing Tools and creative features. Anywhere you type, you can describe what you need and have Siri AI draft, refine, or edit text, including matching your usual tone and punctuation in Mail and Messages. The assistant also proofreads as you type in most third-party apps. Siri AI can edit and generate images with daily usage limits, with expanded access tied to iCloud+ plans. Apple says Siri AI will arrive later this year as a beta for supported devices set to English, with more languages to follow. In the EU, however, Siri AI initially launches only on macOS, watchOS, and visionOS, not on iOS or iPadOS, as Apple cites regulators’ “extreme interpretation of the DMA” around data access and virtual assistants.
