What SteamOS Desktop Mode Is and Why It Matters
SteamOS desktop mode is the full Linux desktop environment that sits beneath the Steam Deck’s console-style gaming interface and turns the handheld into a general-purpose computer for web browsing, file management, app installation, and development work. Built on the KDE Plasma desktop, it behaves like a traditional PC, with windows, panels, and a familiar taskbar-like layout that supports multitasking across games, browsers, and productivity tools. Under the gaming overlay, the Steam Deck runs a complete Linux operating system, so you can use it for coding, document editing, and media playback alongside your Steam library.
