Samsung’s latest foldable phones use ultra-thin glass of different thicknesses on their inner displays, and this design choice changes how durable they feel, how visible the crease looks, and how each model balances flexibility against protection in everyday use. The upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide will reportedly use a 60μm ultra-thin glass (UTG) layer over its flexible AMOLED screen, while the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra sticks to a thinner 45μm sheet that matches the Galaxy Z Fold 7. According to ZDNET Korea reports summarized by several outlets, the Wide’s 60μm panel is about 30 percent thicker than the Fold 7’s UTG, signaling a deliberate move toward tougher, better-feeling foldable displays. Both devices are expected to share Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset and debut together at Samsung’s July 22 Galaxy Unpacked event.
Z Fold 8 Wide vs Ultra: form factor and glass thickness
Samsung is splitting its book-style foldable line into two clearly distinct designs. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra keeps the familiar tall, book-style form factor of the Z Fold 7, including a 45μm UTG layer on the inside display. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide, sometimes described as a passport-style foldable, prioritizes a shorter, wider internal canvas paired with a significantly thicker 60μm glass layer. Android Police notes that this makes the Wide “more interesting” on the materials front than the nominally more premium Ultra. This wider design should improve typing comfort and media viewing on the inner screen, addressing long-standing complaints about cramped cover screens on previous generations. The trade-off is that the Wide could feel thicker and less pocketable, as thicker UTG adds physical depth and weight, even if Samsung keeps the hinge and chassis as slim as possible.

How foldable display thickness affects durability and creases
Foldable display thickness is a balancing act between flexibility and impact resistance. Thinner UTG is easier to bend repeatedly and is less likely to crack during the folding motion itself, which is why Samsung’s past Fold models and the new Z Fold 8 Ultra stick to 45μm glass. However, thicker UTG improves resistance to drops and gives the panel a more glass-like feel under your finger. Ultra-thin glass technology remains central to this strategy, acting as the top protective layer above the flexible AMOLED and under any plastic protector. In the Z Fold 8 Wide, Samsung is testing whether a 60μm UTG layer can deliver better Z Fold 8 glass durability without compromising long-term reliability. TechnoBezz reports that if this thicker glass performs well, Samsung may bring 60μm UTG to the Galaxy Z Fold 9 and even a future Fold 8 Ultra successor. That suggests the Wide is a proving ground for the next generation of crease reduction foldables. With both the Wide and Ultra confirmed for a July 22 launch, users will soon be able to compare how much of a difference 15μm of extra glass thickness really makes in daily use.
