What Samsung is changing with the Z Fold 8 display
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide is a book-style foldable phone whose main hardware story is a thicker inner display glass designed to improve crease visibility and overall durability compared with earlier Fold models and the Ultra variant. Samsung is preparing two book-style devices: the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, which follows the familiar tall, narrow format, and the wider Galaxy Z Fold 8, which takes on a passport-like shape. The key difference is inside the hinge. According to ZDNet Korea, the wide Z Fold 8’s inner ultra-thin glass (UTG) will be 60μm thick, while the Fold 8 Ultra will stay at 45μm, the same figure reported for the Galaxy Z Fold 7. This shift suggests Samsung is now willing to trade some thinness for a better crease experience and stronger inner screen durability.
Thicker glass and the fight against foldable phone crease
The Z Fold 8 display change focuses on one of the biggest complaints with foldables: the visible groove down the middle. A foldable phone crease forms as ultra-thin glass bends thousands of times over a tight radius, and thinner glass has so far been the safer option to prevent cracking while folding. However, thinner panels also tend to show more pronounced creasing and deliver less protection against drops. By moving the wide Galaxy Z Fold 8 to 60μm glass—described as 30 percent thicker than the Fold 7’s UTG—Samsung is trying to reduce how noticeable the crease looks and feels while making the panel more resistant to impact. This aligns with reports that the thicker Samsung Fold 8 glass should “offer a better crease experience” and make the display more appealing to users who have avoided foldables for this reason.
Inner screen durability becomes the headline feature
Inner screen durability has long been the weak point of foldable phones, overshadowing advances in hinges, cameras and processors. With the wide Z Fold 8, Samsung is pushing the display itself to the foreground as a main selling point. A thicker UTG layer promises better protection against pressure points, fingernail taps and casual bumps, all of which can be more dangerous on flexible panels than on rigid glass. At the same time, the change highlights the engineering trade-off: thicker glass is harder to fold safely, but it is less fragile when the phone is shut and in your pocket. By choosing 60μm for the wide model and keeping 45μm on the Z Fold 8 Ultra, Samsung is segmenting the lineup by durability and crease comfort rather than only by raw performance or camera upgrades.
Ultra vs Wide: a new kind of Fold 8 hardware split
This generation’s Ultra vs standard split is more complicated than naming suggests. Android Police notes that the “regular” Z Fold 8 will carry the Ultra branding, while the wider, passport-style model is simply called Galaxy Z Fold 8. The Z Fold 8 Ultra is expected to remain slimmer and more pocket-friendly, keeping its 45μm UTG and prioritising sleekness over maximum reinforcement. The wide Fold 8, on the other hand, leans into a thicker inner glass sheet and a roomier screen. The result is hardware differentiation that extends beyond processing power or camera stacks. People who care most about a lighter device may gravitate to the Ultra, while those who dislike the fold line or worry about long-term screen resilience may prefer the wide model’s thicker Samsung Fold 8 glass and lower foldable phone crease visibility.
What this means for the future of Samsung’s foldables
By giving the standard Z Fold 8 display a thicker UTG layer than the Ultra, Samsung is signalling that foldable innovation now includes comfort and trust, not only cutting-edge designs. The change suggests future models could offer a clearer choice between ultra-thin portability and higher inner screen durability. It also raises expectations for other foldable lines, even as reports say the Flip line will not see major display changes this cycle. With a July Unpacked event set to bring the new Fold models and updated wearables like the Galaxy Watch 9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2, Samsung is building an ecosystem in which foldables are no longer experimental. The Z Fold 8 Wide’s tougher glass and reduced crease appearance aim to make foldable phone screens feel less fragile and more like everyday devices rather than niche hardware.
