MediaTek’s Dimensity 7500 is a budget-tier smartphone processor whose newer CPU core design allows it to rival, and in some efficiency-focused tasks potentially surpass, Google’s flagship Tensor G5 chip used in Pixel 10 phones, highlighting a shift in how price and performance align in modern smartphone processor comparison. MediaTek has long competed in the mid-range, but the Dimensity 7500 marks a notable jump for its budget portfolio. Built on a 4nm process, it targets affordable devices while promising performance that edges closer to premium chips. At the same time, Google’s Tensor G5, though powerful, already trails other high-end Android processors in raw speed. Now it faces pressure from below as well. This dynamic creates an unusual situation: buyers of cheaper phones may enjoy advantages in certain workloads over owners of expensive Pixel 10 models, especially in areas where CPU efficiency matters more than peak single-core power.

CPU Efficiency: Where MediaTek’s Budget Chip Outpaces Tensor G5

The main area where MediaTek budget chips like the Dimensity 7500 embarrass Google Tensor G5 performance is CPU efficiency and modern core design. MediaTek’s octa-core layout uses four Arm C1-Pro cores at 2.6GHz and four C1-Nano cores at 2GHz, replacing the much older Cortex-A78 and Cortex-A55 cores used in earlier Dimensity 7000 parts. According to Android Authority, “Arm previously said the Nano was 26% more efficient,” giving Dimensity 7500’s small cores a clear power advantage over the Tensor G5’s Cortex-A520 cluster. MediaTek claims 68% faster video transcoding, 30% faster app switching, and 11% faster app installs compared to its previous generation. While Tensor G5 still benefits from a single high-performance Cortex-X4 core for peak speed, the Dimensity 7500’s newer medium and little cores can narrow or even close the gap in everyday, multi-core, and background tasks, often with better battery endurance.

What This Means for Pixel 10 Buyers and Google’s Chip Strategy

Pixel 10 chip performance now sits in an awkward middle ground. Google’s Tensor G5 still offers strong single-core bursts and a capable custom configuration, but its reliance on older medium and small cores leaves room for budget rivals to catch up in daily workloads. The Dimensity 7500’s modern C1-Pro and C1-Nano combination, with its efficiency gains, makes prolonged tasks like video encoding, app juggling, and background services less taxing on power. This raises strategic questions for Google. Pixel buyers paying premium prices could see cheaper phones with MediaTek budget chips matching or beating their devices in battery life and sustained CPU tasks. That weakens the traditional assumption that flagship phones always deliver the best all-round performance. To defend the Pixel lineup, future Tensor generations may need a more aggressive CPU roadmap, prioritizing newer core designs rather than leaning mainly on a single powerful prime core and Google’s software optimizations.

Beyond the CPU: GPU, AI, and Connectivity Trade-offs

The Dimensity 7500’s strengths are focused on CPU efficiency; elsewhere, the Google Tensor G5 performance still holds advantages. MediaTek equips the 7500 with a Mali-G625 MC2 GPU, a trimmed-down variant of the Immortalis-G925. While it should outperform older Mali-G615 MC2 setups, Android Authority notes that Pixel 10 devices “beat Dimensity 7300 and 7400 phones by a mile” in graphics, and a similar gap is expected here. Tensor G5’s PowerVR DXT-48-1536 GPU keeps Google ahead for high-end gaming. On AI, the Dimensity 7500’s NPU 850 doubles the AI throughput of its predecessor and supports features like on-device speech recognition, speech-to-text, and smart replies. Tensor G5, meanwhile, is tightly integrated with Google’s AI features, though direct benchmarks are not detailed. Connectivity is strong on both sides: Dimensity 7500 brings a Release 17 5G modem up to 5.2Gbps, Bluetooth 5.4 with long-range support, Wi-Fi 6E, and 4K HDR video capture for up to 200MP, 14-bit cameras.

A New Era for Affordable Phones and the Dimensity Lineup

The Dimensity 7500 signals that MediaTek’s Dimensity lineup is maturing across all price bands, not only the high end. It offers a more modern CPU configuration, an upgraded GPU over earlier 7000-series chips, a more capable NPU, and broad connectivity, all targeted at budget Android phones. Android Authority notes that earlier Dimensity 7000 entries felt dated; this release changes that, especially as history suggests some Dimensity 7500 devices could arrive under USD 400 (approx. RM1,880). For consumers, the message is simple: smartphone processor comparison charts can no longer assume budget means significantly slower. In specific workloads, cheaper phones could be as fast as, or more efficient than, premium Pixels. For the industry, the success of MediaTek budget chips will push rivals to improve mid-range offerings and may force Google to rethink how much differentiation Tensor provides. As CPU efficiency and AI features spread downward in price, software and ecosystem advantages will matter more than badge value alone.
