MediaTek’s latest budget-tier Dimensity 7500 processor shows that affordable smartphone chips can now outperform Google’s Tensor G5 in efficiency-focused CPU design, narrowing the gap between budget and flagship performance in ways that challenge long-held assumptions about premium silicon. The Dimensity 7500 is aimed at budget Android phones, yet it introduces a much more modern CPU cluster than previous Dimensity 7000 series parts. At the same time, Google’s Tensor G5 powers the high-end Pixel 10 but relies on older medium and small CPU cores, creating an unexpected performance overlap. This shift means that paying flagship prices no longer guarantees clearly superior everyday speed and efficiency. For many users, especially those focused on battery life and smooth multitasking rather than peak gaming or AI performance, MediaTek budget chips now offer a compelling alternative to premium processors like Tensor G5.

Inside the Dimensity 7500: New Cores, New Priorities

The Dimensity 7500 marks a major architectural upgrade for MediaTek’s mid-tier line. It uses an octa-core design with four Arm C1-Pro cores at 2.6GHz and four Arm C1-Nano cores at 2GHz, replacing the much older Cortex-A78 and Cortex-A55 mix found in earlier Dimensity 7300 and 7400 chips. According to Android Authority, MediaTek claims “68% faster video transcoding, 30% faster app switching, and 11% faster app installs” versus the previous generation. These gains highlight how a modern core layout can transform daily responsiveness even in budget phones. Crucially, the C1-Nano efficiency cores are designed to consume less power than Arm’s Cortex-A520, which underpins Tensor G5’s smallest cores. That emphasis on efficient performance means many routine tasks, from opening popular apps to light gaming, should feel smoother and last longer on a charge in phones using this affordable processor.

Tensor G5 vs MediaTek: When a Budget CPU Looks Smarter

Google’s Tensor G5 still leads in raw single-core performance thanks to its powerful Cortex-X4 prime core running at 3.78GHz, backed by five Cortex-A725 and two Cortex-A520 cores. On paper, that sounds firmly flagship-class. Yet the Dimensity 7500’s use of newer Arm C1-Pro and C1-Nano cores exposes a key weakness in Tensor G5’s design: its smaller cores are less efficient and less modern. Arm has said the Nano core is 26% more efficient than the Cortex-A520, suggesting that low and mid-load tasks—like background sync, messaging, or casual browsing—could run with lower power draw on MediaTek-based phones. While Tensor G5 still holds a strong GPU advantage and better overall AI muscle, MediaTek vs Google now looks far less one-sided in CPU terms. The budget chip can “get very close to $800+ Pixel flagships” in day-to-day performance, a pointed reflection on Google’s silicon choices.

N4P Manufacturing and Feature Set: Cheap Does Not Mean Crude

The Dimensity 7500 is built on a 4nm-class N4P manufacturing node, aligning it with more advanced processes traditionally reserved for higher-end chips. This node helps improve power efficiency and thermal behavior, enabling decent performance headroom without heavy battery costs. Beyond CPU upgrades, the chip integrates a Mali-G625 MC2 GPU, an NPU 850 with twice the AI performance of its predecessor, and a Release 17 5G modem with speeds up to 5.2Gbps. It also supports Bluetooth 5.4, long-range Bluetooth up to about 1km, Wi-Fi 6E, 4K HDR video capture, and 200MP 14-bit camera sensors. While its GPU is unlikely to match the Tensor G5’s PowerVR DXT-48-1536—especially in intensive gaming—the more balanced spec sheet underlines how affordable processor comparison is shifting. Budget no longer means stripped-down essentials; it now includes many of the same connectivity and camera features seen in premium phones.

What This Means for Phone Prices and Value

As MediaTek budget chips like the Dimensity 7500 close the CPU gap with Tensor G5, the value proposition of mid-range and budget phones becomes harder to ignore. If a sub-flagship device can match or approach an $800+ Pixel in everyday performance, buyers may rethink paying premium prices mainly for marginal gains in GPU power or exclusive AI tricks. Brands can now build smoother, longer-lasting phones around cheaper silicon without sacrificing modern features such as 4K HDR recording or high-resolution cameras. That may push premium chipmakers, including Google, to prioritize efficiency and real-world responsiveness instead of headline-grabbing peak scores. In the near term, this shift should translate into more capable mid-range phones, while in the long term it could force a redefinition of what “flagship performance” means in the MediaTek vs Google competition—and whether it is worth the extra money to most users.
