How to Add Gmail Threads as AI Sources in Drive
The new workflow lives inside Ask Gemini in Drive. When you open Drive on desktop, you click the Gemini button in the top-right corner to launch the chat interface, which also opens a sidebar for managing sources. In that sidebar, an Add button lets you pick which files, folders, and now Gmail threads the assistant should consider. Choosing Add from Gmail opens a search bar where you can look up specific conversations by keyword, then select multiple threads and confirm with Add. Those emails become declared sources for that Gemini chat, similar to how NotebookLM treats source documents. This explicit source-picking keeps users in control while eliminating the need to move text between apps. According to Android Authority, Gemini in Drive already summarized the contents of all files in a folder when asked, and Gmail now extends that capability to inbox context as well.

Once Gmail threads are added as sources, Gemini can generate AI-powered summaries and insights that reflect both email and document history. Travel planners can request an itinerary based on brochures in Drive plus confirmation emails for flights and hotels. According to Digital Trends, the aim is to give users “a complete view of business context” by analysing conversations, attached documents, and related Drive files together.
