Gemini’s new Gmail–Drive integration is a Google Workspace feature that lets users add specific Gmail threads as sources in Ask Gemini in Google Drive so the AI can answer questions and summarize documents with direct email context, reducing context switching and making document work more accurate and responsive to real conversations. Until now, Ask Gemini in Drive focused on files and folders, scanning their contents to summarize, rename, organize, or answer questions about them. With Gmail support, users can feed entire conversations into the same workspace, allowing Gemini to interpret email discussions, attached files, and Drive documents together. This is part of Google’s wider push to embed Gemini across Workspace as an “immersive workspace” for multi-turn conversations. How Ask Gemini Uses Email Context in Documents
In practical terms, the new Gemini Gmail integration lives inside the Ask Gemini panel in Google Drive. When you click the Gemini button in the top-right of Drive, a chat interface opens alongside a sidebar where you can add sources. A new option, Add from Gmail, lets you search your inbox by keyword and select specific threads to include. Gemini then treats those conversations as reference material, alongside folders and files you choose from Drive. That means you can ask it to summarise a project folder while it also reads the related email approvals, or to draft a response that reflects decisions scattered across multiple messages. According to Google, the goal is to give users “a complete view of business context” so the AI can produce more accurate, context-aware responses that reflect what people have actually discussed over email.
From Inbox to Docs: New Workplace Productivity Flows
This tighter link between email context in documents and Drive turns Gemini into more than a file search tool; it becomes a workplace productivity assistant. Imagine a long vendor negotiation spread across multiple Gmail threads and proposal files in Drive. Previously, you had to bounce between Gmail and Drive tabs, manually stitching together what was agreed where. Now, you can add the relevant threads and folders into Ask Gemini and request a summary of key decisions, deadlines, or open questions in one place. Gemini can also surface attachments referenced in those emails and cross-reference them with documents already in Drive. For personal tasks, Google highlights scenarios like trip planning, where you combine travel brochures in Drive with booking confirmations in Gmail to generate a single, consistent itinerary. One of the biggest gains from this update is reduced context switching. But the convenience arrives with privacy questions.
