According to Bielefeld University, this expansion is intended to build “a more representative panorama of the fans following the competition.” Fans register online and, once their supporter group has enough participants, receive instructions to link their devices. They can optionally report how they watched each game, adding context to the biometric readings. This bridge between consumer tech and academic study means that wearing a smartwatch during a match now doubles as a contribution to sports emotion research.

What Scientists Hope to Learn from Fans’ Bodies

Researchers want to move beyond the vague idea that football is exciting and quantify exactly how strong emotional events affect the human body. They are particularly interested in how goals, clear scoring chances, penalty kicks, and unexpected outcomes map onto spikes in heart rate or stress scores and shifts in sleep or daily activity. Earlier work from the same group showed that fans in a stadium averaged 94 heartbeats per minute during a cup final, while television viewers averaged 79, with heart rates jumping by up to 36% after goals.
