Then there is Toyota, which is attacking the problem from the other end of the vehicle’s life. Its factory upgrade program lets owners of aging Toyota and Lexus models add new connectivity, performance upgrades, and visual updates through authorized dealers. This retrofit strategy acknowledges a reality: the average age of a passenger car has climbed to 14.5 years, and many drivers want modern tech without buying a new vehicle.

What Owners Gain—and What Might Annoy Them

For drivers, the immediate win from over-the-air car updates is convenience. When 70% of software-related recalls can be handled without visiting a service center, you save time and hassle. OTA car software updates also bring timely security patches and performance tweaks that used to be frozen in place once the car left the lot. Retrofits like Toyota’s program add tangible comforts to older cars: remote start and climate preconditioning via phone, connected alarm systems, larger infotainment screens, blind spot monitoring, remote parking, and even wireless charging or USB-C ports. But the model has sharp edges. Connectivity gaps can delay updates, and older vehicles may fall outside the OTA ecosystem entirely, needing physical upgrades instead. Over-the-air car updates are on track to become as expected as airbags, not an optional tech extra. That said, the novelty of OTA will wear off if updates stop improving day-to-day experience and drift into gimmicks. Automakers are experimenting with performance boosts, personalized interiors, and virtual driving modes, like Toyota’s optional package that adds power and simulated gear changes to one of its electric models. The next battle is less technical than philosophical: will carmakers use OTA vehicle software to keep enhancing a product you already paid for, or to carve basic capabilities into recurring fees? Consumers have already signaled they will not tolerate paying monthly for locked-in hardware features. Drivers should demand that the smartphone-style future of car software updates serves them, not the balance sheet.
