What Siri AI and Apple Intelligence Mean for Your Devices

Siri AI compatibility describes which iPhones, iPads, and Macs can run Apple’s newest Apple Intelligence features and how many of Siri’s upgraded capabilities each device can access, from basic on‑device understanding to advanced conversation, writing tools, and voice controls. Apple Intelligence arrives through new software releases and combines on‑device and cloud models to power features like writing assistance, image generation, visual intelligence, and a more conversational Siri. Apple says these features come at no additional cost, but advanced cloud tools such as image generation will have daily usage limits, with higher limits available through most iCloud+ plans. Importantly, not every device that runs the latest iOS, iPadOS, or macOS can use the same Siri AI tier, so knowing your hardware’s ceiling helps set realistic expectations and plan future upgrades.

Full Siri AI on iPhone: Which Models Get Every Feature

On iPhone, Siri AI has two support levels. The full experience requires hardware powerful enough to run Apple’s most advanced on‑device model, AFM 3 Core Advanced. According to ZDNET, devices in this top tier include iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air. These phones can run both AFM 3 Core and AFM 3 Core Advanced, unlocking conversational Siri, better awareness of on‑screen context, and premium extras such as expressive voice controls and high‑accuracy dictation with automatic punctuation and formatting. A broader group of iPhones can access Siri AI but only with the basic AFM 3 Core model: iPhone 17, 17e, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, iPhone Air, iPhone 16 series, and iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. Older models that still receive iOS 27 may miss Siri AI entirely or see a limited feature set.

iPad and Mac Siri AI Tiers: From M1 to the Latest Chips

For iPad and Mac, Apple Intelligence devices fall into similar tiers. Apple says its most powerful on‑device AI model, expressive voices, and enhanced dictation require an iPad with an M4 chip or later plus at least 12GB of memory, or a Mac with an M3 chip or later and at least 12GB of memory. Those models can run AFM 3 Core Advanced and gain the full Siri AI package. A wider range of hardware can still use the basic AFM 3 Core model: iPad Pro M1 and later, iPad Air M1 and later, and the iPad mini with A17 Pro, along with Macs from MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac mini, and Mac Studio with M1 and later, and Mac Pro with M2 Ultra and later. These devices get core Siri AI features, but not everything from the premium tier.

Other Devices, OS Requirements, and Regional Limits

Beyond phones, tablets, and computers, Siri AI touches other products. ZDNET notes that Apple Vision Pro with M5 supports both AFM 3 Core and Advanced, while Apple Vision Pro with M2 supports the basic model. For wearables, Apple Watch Series 9 and later, Ultra 2 and later, and Apple Watch SE 3 can access Siri AI features once watchOS 27 is installed. All tiers require the new OS versions: iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, and so on. However, Apple warns that Siri AI will not launch on iPhone and iPad in the European Union at first, and that Apple Intelligence features, including Siri AI, will not initially be available in China as regulatory work continues. This means even owners of fully compatible hardware may have to wait for regional rollouts.

How to Decide If You Need a Hardware Upgrade

To decide if upgrading makes sense, start by checking whether your current device can run the newest OS. If it supports iOS 27, iPadOS 27, or macOS 27 but appears in the lower Siri AI tier, you will still gain core Apple Intelligence tools but miss expressive voice tuning and the most precise dictation. Power users who rely on voice input or want Siri as a central productivity assistant may prefer hardware that supports AFM 3 Core Advanced, such as iPhone 17 Pro models, iPad M4‑class devices with 12GB of memory, or Macs with M3 and 12GB of memory. If you only use Siri for quick timers, messages, and simple queries, staying on a basic‑tier device and seeing how the public beta feels later this year could be enough, at least until your next normal upgrade cycle.
