Apple’s new Siri chatbot app is a redesigned version of the Apple AI assistant that shifts from short voice commands to longer, synced conversations across devices while adding a dedicated chat-style interface that works more like modern standalone chatbot apps such as ChatGPT and Google Gemini. In iOS 27, Siri is no longer limited to a glowing orb responding to quick questions. Instead, it appears in an iMessage-like window with chat bubbles, searchable history, and an app icon on the Home Screen. Chats will sync through iCloud so a session started on an iPhone can continue on an iPad, Mac, or future devices like smart glasses and HomePods. This evolution turns Siri into a persistent AI companion rather than a one-off voice tool, signaling Apple’s intent to make it the center of its AI ecosystem instead of a secondary feature buried behind a button.
Google Gemini Integration and Optional AI Service Switching
The most dramatic change is under the hood: Apple is tying the iOS 27 Siri to Google Gemini integration as the backbone of its Apple Intelligence stack. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that “iOS 27 will include a chatbot version of Siri that operates like ChatGPT and Gemini,” highlighting how closely the reworked assistant mirrors today’s leading AI chat tools. Apple and Google have said that Gemini provides the “most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models,” while Apple continues to develop its own models on top. Importantly, Siri will not lock users into one AI provider. According to Gurman, iOS 27 will let people switch between services such as Gemini, ChatGPT, or Claude for features like Writing Tools and Image Playground, turning Siri into a versatile front end rather than a single-model silo.
A Standalone Chatbot Competing With ChatGPT and Gemini
By giving Siri its own app, Apple is stepping directly into the standalone chatbot race instead of leaving that space to OpenAI and Google. The new Siri chatbot app will feel familiar to anyone who has used ChatGPT: typed prompts, long-form answers, and a scrollable conversation history that can be searched and revisited. But Apple is layering this on top of its systemwide Apple AI assistant features. A new “Ask Siri” toggle in built-in apps and a “Write with Siri” option for Writing Tools will let users call up AI help without leaving what they are doing.
