At the same time, Apple is not fully outsourcing intelligence. Gemini works as the backbone for Apple’s own Apple Intelligence stack, and users gain options. Gurman notes that iOS 27 will let people switch between AI services such as Gemini, ChatGPT, or Claude for features like Writing Tools and Image Playground. This flexibility marks a subtle but important shift: Apple keeps its walled garden, yet allows third-party AI models to run inside it. Siri becomes a kind of AI router, directing requests to whichever service users trust or prefer for a given task.
What the new Siri means for Apple’s AI future
The redesigned Siri signals that Apple wants a single AI agent that spans devices, apps, and future hardware.
