AI CAD assistants move from concept to everyday tool
AI CAD assistants are integrated software agents inside design and simulation platforms that use chat-style interaction and model awareness to answer questions, automate commands, and optimize geometry across product development workflows, reducing repetitive steps for engineers while keeping the work in the native CAD environment. This shift is visible across Design and Simulation Week, where sessions focus on “climbing the AI ladder” and on agent-based engineering workflows that link live simulation and design review. Vendors are no longer presenting AI as a distant vision; they are placing assistants directly in the sketch, assembly, and simulation screens that engineers use daily. As AI gains access to both documentation and 3D model data, it starts to close the gap between help systems, design automation tools, and engineering simulation AI, turning guidance and automation into one continuous experience.
Inside Creo 13: Advise, Assist, and Automate
PTC’s Creo 13 and Creo+ 13.3 bring an AI CAD assistant straight into the modeling window through a chat interface. The Creo AI Assistant currently has three modes: Advise, Assist, and Automate. Advise, available to all users, works as an in-product support chatbot that pulls from Creo documentation and design practices so users do not need to leave the design environment for help. Assist is a beta extension that reads the active 3D model and can perform tasks such as generating a bill of characteristics and exporting it to CSV. Automate, in alpha, is planned as a further extension that will “provide sophisticated design and geometry-level intelligence to understand CAD geometry and create, modify, or optimize designs.” Together, these Creo AI features point toward assistants that both explain and act, linking support, design automation tools, and early engineering simulation AI.

Speeding assemblies, simulation coverage, and generative design
Beyond the conversational AI CAD assistant, Creo 13 focuses on measurable productivity gains across the design stack. According to PTC information reported by Engineering.com, remote users working with large CAD assemblies can see “up to 70% faster assembly loading from Windchill over a wide-area network.” Simulation-driven design gains wider engineering simulation AI coverage, with more assembly and electronics-related scenarios available directly in the modeling workflow. Generative design now optimizes in the assembly context and supports broader multiphysics cases and additional constraint types. Improvements in model-based definition expand 3D PDF export and annotation, while composite tools add faster transition calculations and easier reuse of laminate intent. Together, these updates show how CAD vendors are embedding intelligence not only in the chat window but in every step that touches geometry, simulation, and manufacturing preparation.
Routine engineering tasks give way to higher-value work
As AI gains model awareness, routine tasks that once consumed hours are starting to move to assistants. In Creo’s Assist mode, engineers can interrogate the live 3D model for compliance details or design data and have structured outputs created automatically, instead of building reports by hand. Expanded presets and updates to surfacing, sketching, sheet metal, welding, and multi-body tools further reduce repetitive setup work. Other platforms are following a similar path: IronCAD’s latest release adds an AI Design Assistant that accepts natural-language prompts and generates manufacturable assemblies for refinement, plus an AI Drawing Assistant that automates documentation steps. These design automation tools align with the goal of engineering simulation AI: let algorithms handle parameter sweeps, routine checks, and documentation while designers focus on trade-offs, multiphysics behavior, and cross-discipline coordination, from electrification to composite manufacturing.
A race to embed AI across the engineering software stack
The new Creo AI Assistant arrives amid a broader race among engineering software vendors to embed AI throughout CAD and simulation workflows. Design and Simulation Week’s agenda highlights how firms such as SimScale, CoLab, and Comsol are experimenting with agentic engineering workflows, GPU-accelerated multiphysics, and data-driven design, all of which depend on AI components embedded near the engineer’s daily tools. PTC is positioning Creo 13 as part of a lifecycle-wide strategy, where product data flows across design, simulation, manufacturing, and quality activities. IronCAD, Autodesk, and others are making similar moves, from AI-infused modeling to flexible access programs for smaller firms. As AI CAD assistants mature from support chatbots into geometry-aware co-pilots, the competitive edge will likely come from how well each platform connects design automation tools, engineering simulation AI, and enterprise product data into one coherent workflow.
