Anthropic itself conceded that the improved classifier would flag more benign coding and debugging prompts, admitting these guardrails come at the cost of more false positives in routine development work.
Why developers are sticking with Opus 4.8
On paper, Fable 5 shares the same base model as Mythos, positioned as the safer, general-purpose sibling while Mythos stays restricted to trusted cybersecurity partners. In practice, developers are discovering that safety classifier means their “Fable” sessions frequently devolve into plain Opus 4.8 runs whenever prompts trip vague security signals—sometimes by merely mentioning the word “security” in a request. One columnist, who already pays USD 100 (approx. RM460) a month for a subscription that includes Opus 4.8, decided to avoid Fable 5 for daily work, arguing that sudden downgrades could derail serious AI projects and that paying per-token for a model that might quietly fall back to what he already has “just doesn’t seem cost-effective”. The trade-off: safety, opacity, and what comes next
Anthropic is trying to walk a narrow line. It insists Fable 5 does not offer unique offensive cyber capabilities because of its guardrails and says it is working with large cloud and tech partners on shared standards to detect and fix jailbreaks.
