A federal study now finds that cannabis use disorder affects 9.3% of adult men and 5.6% of women, and has risen over recent years. A national drug treatment centre laboratory has detected high-risk synthetic cannabinoids in products sold in shops, including vapes, vape “juice” and edibles, as well as in the illicit market. Out of 76 vapes or vape juices analysed in 2026, 28 contained HHC or related semi-synthetic cannabinoids, eight contained potent synthetic cannabinoids, and 10 contained an acetate compound linked to lung disease. The same sampling found only a dozen products with cannabis or related compounds and 41 with CBD.
This is not a niche lab curiosity; it is a consumer safety failure. These substances are linked to serious physical and mental health harms, including psychosis, loss of consciousness, and severe intoxication. Users who think they are taking a “standard” cannabis vape may instead be consuming unlabelled chemicals with far more intense and chaotic effects. The rise in cannabis use disorder is not just a statistic; it is visible in emergency rooms and psychiatric clinics. The federal study defines cannabis use disorder as a state where lives are negatively affected by cannabis and people have trouble stopping or reducing use. That harm shows up as missed work, failing classes, strained relationships, and spiralling mood problems. Investigators have already reported growing concern among youth addiction and mental health providers over young people presenting with serious problems after heavy cannabis use, including cannabis-induced psychosis.

High-potency THC products, aggressive consumption patterns, and the quiet spread of synthetic cannabinoids have moved cannabis into a new risk category that our public-health systems have been slow to recognise. The federal research showing cannabis use disorder rising toward the prevalence of alcohol addiction should be a line in the sand.
This does not mean returning to scare tactics or denying any medical use. It means speaking plainly: high-potency THC products and unregulated synthetics are driving a surge in cannabis use disorder and worsening cannabis addiction mental health outcomes. Regulators should require clear potency labelling and screen aggressively for synthetics; clinicians should screen routinely for cannabis use disorder; consumers should recognise that “stronger” often means “harder to quit” and “riskier for your mind.” The era of casual denial is over. Modern cannabis has changed, and our response needs to change with it.
