Beta Client Zeros In on Steam Controller Doubled Input Issue

The newest Steam Deck beta update focuses squarely on long-standing Steam Controller quirks, especially a doubled input issue that appeared while the controller was charging on its puck. When users rested the controller on the dock, a single button press could be registered twice, causing unintentional actions in games and menus. The beta client now corrects this behavior at the Steam Input level, preventing duplicate signals from being generated during charging. Alongside this, Valve has fixed a problem where grip thresholds for the Steam Controller were being loaded incorrectly in the device calibration screen, which could lead to unpredictable grip activation. The update also restores the ability to edit Steam button chord configurations, an important feature for players who rely on advanced shortcuts and layered commands. All of these changes are available by opting into the Steam Deck’s Beta or Preview channels in System Settings.

Improved Grip Threshold Calibration and New Grip Sensor Options

Beyond the doubled input issue, the latest client update tightens how the Steam Deck ecosystem handles the controller’s grip sensors. Previously, incorrectly loaded grip thresholds in the calibration screen could cause grips to activate too easily or fail to trigger when expected. This update refines that calibration logic so that grip activation aligns more closely with how firmly users actually hold the controller. Valve has also added a dedicated Grip Sensor settings panel for the Steam Controller, accessible via Steam → Settings → Controller → Details → Calibration & Advanced Settings → Grip Sensors. This new menu gives players a focused space to experiment with how sensitive their grips feel, helping diagnose accidental activations or missed presses. By centralizing configuration and surfacing grip-related options, the Steam Deck client now makes it noticeably easier to fine-tune input behavior for different hand sizes, play styles, and game genres.

Trackpad Lockout, Firmware Tweaks, and Ecosystem Compatibility Fixes

The updates also refine how the Steam Controller’s touchpads and firmware interact with the Steam Deck. A new Trackpad Lockout toggle, found under Settings → Controller → Details → Calibration & Advanced → Trackpad Lockout, lets users disable Joystick vs Trackpad Locking, the feature that blocks trackpad input while a joystick is in use. Turning this off can help players who rely on simultaneous joystick and trackpad control, while those prone to accidental touches can keep it enabled. On the firmware side, Valve has addressed a bug that caused some left trackpads to struggle registering touches on their left edge when the controller was used wirelessly. Additional fixes resolve cases where configuration selections failed to save for newer Steam Controllers, as well as compatibility issues when the controller was docked to the charging puck. Together, these improvements create a more predictable and stable experience across the Steam Deck and Steam Controller ecosystem.
