Midjourney built its reputation on text-to-image models, and more recently on AI video, yet its scanner relies mainly on ultrasound physics and signal processing. Visitors stand on a platform, descend through a ring packed with hundreds of thousands of ultrasonic elements, and are immersed in what the company describes as a shallow pool of “golden light.” Each element emits sound and listens for echoes, echoing a swarm of “tiny dolphins” using echolocation. The aim is a 3D body map down to fractions of a millimeter in detail, but early reports suggest real scans still take closer to 20 minutes than to the advertised minute. Despite marketing that frames the Midjourney body scanner as a from-scratch invention, the underlying ultrasound hardware is licensed from Butterfly Network, whose ultrasound-on-chip platform shrank conventional scanners onto silicon. According to Butterfly Network, the two companies signed a co-development and licensing deal in November 2025 worth up to USD 74 million (approx. RM341 million) over five years, including USD 15 million (approx. RM69 million) upfront and USD 10 million (approx. RM46 million) annually. The Midjourney device uses Butterfly’s dense arrays of tiny transducers, reconfigured into a ring with roughly 358,000 to half a million ultrasonic elements that fire up to a thousand times a second. Yet Midjourney’s public announcement initially skipped any mention of this partnership, prompting Butterfly to issue its own statement. The contrast between the marketing narrative and the borrowed sensor stack underlines how AI health imaging projects often depend on existing medical device firms for the hardest hardware work.
Regulation, FDA Gaps, and the Spa-as-Medical-Device Problem
The Midjourney body scanner occupies a grey zone between wellness gadget and regulated medical device. The company says its first product will be a “body composition map” of muscle, fat, bone, and organs—a use case that does not currently need FDA clearance. However, any attempt to diagnose disease would push the scanner firmly into medical device territory. The scanner has no FDA clearance today, yet Midjourney is planning dedicated full-body ultrasound spa sites, not hospital installations, which could normalize repeated scans outside clinical oversight.
