What the Momentum 5 Headphones Are and Why They Matter
Sennheiser’s Momentum 5 headphones are premium wireless, over-ear noise-cancelling headphones that combine long battery life, advanced Bluetooth audio, and a user-replaceable battery to extend product lifespan, reduce e-waste, and set a higher standard for repairable, high-end audio gear in a market dominated by sealed, disposable designs. On the surface, the Momentum 5 looks like a careful refinement of the Momentum 4 formula: familiar 42mm transducers, a minimalist design, and sound tuned for full-bodied playback with dynamic bass. Internally, though, they add Hi-Res Audio certification, Snapdragon Sound with aptX Lossless support, and a wireless platform ready for future Bluetooth 6.0 via firmware. Sennheiser also promises up to 57 hours of battery life with active noise cancellation running, preserving the long-play character of the series while shifting focus toward longevity, comfort, and a quieter daily listening experience.

User-Replaceable Battery: A Right-to-Repair Turning Point
The most distinctive wireless headphone feature on the Momentum 5 is its user-replaceable 700 mAh battery, which moves these cans firmly into the category of replaceable battery headphones. Using a small Phillips-head screwdriver, owners can open the earcup and swap the cell themselves, rather than sending the product to a service center or discarding it when capacity fades. This right to repair audio approach directly addresses e-waste concerns around sealed premium models. Sennheiser’s consumer audio president Lilika Beck says the brand aims to prove that high-performance sound and environmental responsibility "can – and must – exist in the same product." Combined with adaptable hardware, firmware-upgradeable DSP and wireless engines, and plastic-free, compact packaging, the Momentum 5 positions longevity as a core selling point rather than an afterthought in the premium headphone market.
Premium Noise Cancellation Takes a Big Step Forward
Active noise cancellation has seen one of the biggest upgrades generation to generation. Sennheiser says the Momentum 5’s premium noise cancellation is up to three times more effective at reducing background noise such as office chatter compared with the Momentum 4, thanks to a supercharged ANC system. The number of microphones dedicated to ANC and transparency has doubled, with four microphones per side for a total of eight. That uptick not only deepens noise reduction for travel and commuting, it also aims to deliver more natural voice quality on calls. Firmware plays a key role: at launch, a day-one update unlocks Dolby Atmos with head-tracking for compatible content, while future firmware is planned to enable Bluetooth 6.0. Together with the Smart Control Plus app’s 8-band EQ, presets, and sound personalisation engine, the Momentum 5 offers flexible control over both silence and sound.
Comfort, Price Increase, and Market Position
Sennheiser describes the Momentum 5 as designed to “disappear on your head,” highlighting a comfort-first philosophy for long listening sessions. The headband and earcups keep the understated Momentum aesthetic while aiming for lighter, less noticeable wear over hours of use. In terms of numbers, estimated battery life dips slightly from 60 hours on the Momentum 4 to 57 hours with ANC, a small tradeoff for the new internal architecture. Pricing has moved up as well: in one market, the recommended price rises from USD 350 (approx. RM1,610) for the Momentum 4 to USD 399.99 (approx. RM1,840) for the Momentum 5, and Sennheiser lists £329.90 / €399.90 / USD 399.99 (approx. RM1,840) / AUD 749 for the new model. That increase reflects the replaceable battery, improved ANC hardware, Atmos support, and more durable, eco-minded packaging, placing Momentum 5 firmly among high-end wireless headphone contenders.
