Qualcomm’s emerging 2nm Snapdragon roadmap is a strategic shift from single-flagship annual launches toward a multi-tier, mid-cycle upgrade ecosystem that spans smartphones and non-handset devices, using custom Oryon CPU cores to differentiate performance and efficiency across several premium platforms. Qualcomm’s ninth annual Snapdragon Summit will run from September 22-24 in Maui, where the company is expected to debut its first 2nm mobile processors built with custom Oryon CPU cores. Ahead of this, a leaked roadmap from Digital Chat Station shows Qualcomm developing at least two flagship smartphone chipsets on a 2nm process alongside refreshed 3nm platforms across price and performance tiers. The headline is clear: Qualcomm is done with one-size-fits-all flagships and is reorganizing Snapdragon around layers, not single peaks.

Two 2nm Flagships: Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Gen 6 Pro
The center of gravity in this roadmap is a pair of Snapdragon 2nm chips that finally push Oryon CPU mobile designs into mass-market phones. Qualcomm is expected to unveil the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 (SM8950) and the higher-tier Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro (SM8975), both built on TSMC’s 2nm process with a fresh Oryon CPU design. The Pro model reportedly uses a 2+3+3 Oryon CPU layout with 16MB of shared L2 cache and an Adreno 850 GPU with 18MB of GMEM, plus support for LPDDR6 memory. The standard version keeps the same CPU architecture but pairs it with an Adreno 845 GPU, 12MB of GMEM, and LPDDR5X support, making it a slightly leaner but still premium option. This dual-flagship setup is Qualcomm’s answer to a market that wants “ultra” and “normal” at the silicon level, not only in phone branding.

Mid-Cycle Upgrades: A New Cadence for Snapdragon
Equally important is how Qualcomm is filling the gaps between big node jumps. The leak points to several Snapdragon 8-series platforms on TSMC’s 3nm process, including the existing SM8850 and a refreshed SM8850Q that could arrive as a higher-clocked or special edition of the current flagship. Another in-between platform, SM8845 Pro, is said to sit between current and next-generation flagships, offering incremental gains over existing 8-series chips. This is a clear mid-cycle smartphone upgrades strategy: Qualcomm wants to keep its partners’ lineups “new” without waiting for the next major node. The company typically reveals its flagship Snapdragon platforms during its annual Snapdragon Summit in the second half of the year, but this roadmap signals that the real action will now happen year-round, with quieter but meaningful refreshes resetting performance baselines mid-cycle.
Beyond Phones: Positioning Oryon and Snapdragon for New Categories
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 2nm chips are launching at the same time the company is pushing hard beyond smartphones. The ninth Snapdragon Summit will still focus on mobile silicon, yet it lands as Qualcomm rolls out a data center CPU called Dragonfly C1000 and signs Meta as a customer for 2028 production. According to the company, it nearly doubled its 2029 non-handset revenue outlook to USD 40 billion from USD 22 billion, while its shares climbed 15% after this forecast. CFO Akash Palkhiwala said Qualcomm already has business with “nearly every hyperscaler,” giving it a built-in data center customer base. In that context, Oryon CPU mobile designs are not only phone parts; they are building blocks for a wider portfolio that spans data centers and other devices. Snapdragon stops being “just a smartphone brand” and becomes the front door into a much larger compute story.
Competitive Stakes at Snapdragon Summit and What Comes Next
The timing of this roadmap is tightly choreographed around Snapdragon Summit. Phones using the new platforms should land quickly: the Xiaomi 18 series is expected by the end of September, lining up against Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro series due in early September, while the iQOO 16, HONOR Magic9, and OnePlus 16 are also tipped to adopt the platform. That means Qualcomm’s partners will not wait long to convert 2nm marketing into store-shelf hardware.
