From Chat Window to Productivity Hub
The Claude Desktop redesign is a set of interface and workflow changes that turn the app from a primarily chat-driven assistant into a project-centric workspace where users and autonomous agents share context, manage tasks, and coordinate ongoing work across multiple sessions. Anthropic is preparing another round of layout changes for the Claude desktop app, barely two weeks after Chat and Cowork moved into a shared Home. In recent builds, the toggle between these two modes is leaving the prompt bar—where it landed with the July 7 update—and moving to the top of the window, mirroring the mode switcher placement in other merged AI desktop apps. This sounds minor, but it signals a clear intention: Claude Desktop is being treated less as a linear chat feed and more as a multi-mode control panel for serious work.

Projects Move to the Foreground
The most telling part of the Claude Desktop redesign is the new treatment of the Claude Projects feature. Anthropic is testing a way to surface projects directly in the navigation sidebar, above recent conversations, with options to pin them, sort them, and decide what shows up there. For people juggling many workspaces in Claude, having projects one click away instead of behind a separate page would be a small but meaningful shift. It turns projects from an optional extra into the primary way power users organize their work. On the web, Claude Code is getting a dedicated projects section where users would be able to create new projects and customize them, adding a management layer on top of its current single-folder or repository scope. Taken together, these moves show Anthropic wants the desktop app to be the center of gravity for deep work, while Cowork expands to web and mobile in beta.

Managed Projects and Autonomous Task Management
The more radical change is the emergence of managed Claude projects, which push Claude agent capabilities into everyday workflows. A recent build surfaces a choice, when a project is created, between a standard project and a “managed” one, described with the line that Claude takes on tasks and keeps the project organized. That framing points to a persistent Claude environment that carries surrounding context, works with some autonomy, and could run scheduled work rather than waiting for each prompt. This is where autonomous task management stops being a developer-only toy and becomes a consumer feature. Anthropic’s developer platform already offers Claude Managed Agents, cloud-hosted agents that hold state across sessions and refine their own memory through a scheduled process the company calls dreaming. Managed projects read like those threads gathered into one surface, where sessions in a project share memory and instructions and each one feeds the project’s wider knowledge.

Conway’s Sunset and the Move Beyond Chat
These updates are not happening in isolation; they fit Anthropic’s steady move from chat toward standing, self-organizing workspaces. The company has tried knowledge bases before and has been running Conway, its always-on internal agent, which is set to close on July 24, timing that could mark a handoff rather than an ending. It is hard to read the end of Conway as anything other than a prelude to public agent capabilities in Claude Desktop, especially as internal testing of managed projects and sidebar changes is plainly live but still marked internal, limited to staff and a small circle of trusted testers. Given how fresh the current design is, this looks like a candidate for an A/B test with a small group of users rather than an imminent rollout, and Anthropic is known for experimenting with interface ideas and quietly rolling them back when they underperform. But if managed projects reach users, they would offer a project that quietly maintains itself between visits, a shape no rival lab currently sells.
From Conversational AI to Enterprise Workflow Platform
The strategic picture is clear: Claude Desktop is being positioned as a productivity platform beyond conversational AI, aimed squarely at enterprise workflows and power users. Cowork projects already run scheduled tasks, and Claude Code carries context between sessions through project memory and instructions, so folding these capabilities into managed projects makes the desktop app feel like a front-end for autonomous work rather than a chat box. For Anthropic, this fits a steady move from chat toward standing, self-organizing workspaces. If the redesign and managed projects ship broadly, the dominant user behavior will shift from “start a new chat” to “open a project and let Claude continue the work.” Ordinary users gain quicker access to their workspaces through sidebar projects; teams get shared projects tied to Team and Enterprise plans; and everyone benefits from agents that keep projects organized between visits. The conclusion is simple: Claude Desktop is quietly becoming an operating system for AI-managed work.
