This marks a clear break from the past, when SteamOS unofficially favored AMD-based devices such as the ASUS ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go. For the first time, owners of Intel handhelds and desktop GPUs can install SteamOS directly, turning the OS into a broader PC gaming platform rather than an AMD-centric experiment.

MSI Claw SteamOS experience: promising, but not yet a Windows rival
YouTube channel ETA Prime installed the SteamOS 3.8.7 beta on the MSI Claw 8 AI+, then updated it to 3.9, confirming that MSI Claw SteamOS support is functional and surprisingly complete for a beta build. Sleep mode works efficiently, and in-game performance is playable, but several quirks remain: the menu button does not work, and users cannot tune power limits through the OS. In testing, Cyberpunk 2077 at 720p using the Steam Deck preset reached about 40fps at a 17W target and climbed close to 60fps at 1080p when power was pushed to 30W, still slower than the same hardware on Windows 11. Forza Horizon 6 nearly hit 60fps at 720p on 17W and topped 70fps at 1080p and 30W, but noticeable dips suggested SteamOS is still struggling to balance CPU and GPU power sharing.
Intel Arc B580 on SteamOS: desktop support with heavy caveats
On the desktop, SteamOS Intel support now extends to the Intel Arc B580, though it demands more effort than on the MSI Claw. Reddit user SaperPL reported that they had to install SteamOS using a Radeon GPU and then swap to the Arc card via a repair image before the system would boot reliably. Once running, games launched and played correctly, but performance lagged behind equivalent Windows setups. According to SaperPL, performance without resizable BAR enabled was “horrendous,” with frame rates dropping to 20fps in titles like Indiana Jones and Toxic Commando. This shows that while Valve’s drivers and kernel changes recognize the Arc B580, they still depend heavily on correct platform features and tuning. Desktop users interested in SteamOS today should expect troubleshooting, reduced performance, and a clear need to keep Windows as a fallback for demanding games.
Why this beta matters and who should install SteamOS now
This beta matters because it ends the practical AMD exclusivity that has defined SteamOS since the Steam Deck, and it signals Valve’s intent to grow an OS ecosystem that includes Intel handhelds and desktop GPUs. Yet Valve itself is not urging everyone to switch. Retro Handhelds notes that “just because Valve is adding support for more devices doesn’t necessarily mean you should immediately switch to SteamOS,” pointing to weaker performance on Intel Arc B580 and missing features like TDP adjustment on handhelds. Alternative Linux gaming distributions such as Bazzite and CachyOS may still be better options for Intel users who want a polished Linux experience today. For now, SteamOS beta testing on Intel is best suited to enthusiasts willing to tinker, report bugs, and accept lower performance in exchange for early access to Valve’s evolving platform.
