HarmonyOS 7: An agentic AI operating system aimed at the Siri gap
HarmonyOS 7 is an agentic AI operating system that rebuilds the smartphone stack around thousands of coordinated AI agents, shifting from app-by-app tapping to intent-driven commands that spread across devices and services. Four days after Apple confirmed that its upgraded Siri AI would not launch in China, Huawei used its developer conference in Dongguan to present HarmonyOS 7 as the start of an “Agent era”, with AI embedded at system level rather than bolted on as separate tools. At the centre is Xiaoyi (also known as Celia in some markets), now a system-level intelligence hub that sits on top of Huawei’s openPangu 2.0 foundation model. Xiaoyi orchestrates more than 2,000 third-party AI agents, compressing multi-step tasks into single natural-language requests and positioning HarmonyOS 7 as a China Siri alternative for users and developers who want integrated Huawei AI integration instead of cloud-only assistants.
Inside the agent-native architecture and 2,000 AI agents
HarmonyOS 7’s biggest structural change is the HarmonyOS Intelligent Agent Framework 2.0, which Huawei describes as an “intent-as-service” model that turns user goals into coordinated actions. According to Huawei’s HDC figures, Xiaoyi now controls more than 2,100 system-level capabilities and connects to over 2,000 AI agents built by partners across its developer ecosystem. These agents handle everything from travel planning with Ctrip to health data analysis with Ant Medical, letting the assistant route a task through the most suitable service instead of opening apps one by one. Underneath sits openPangu 2.0, with a Pro model at 505 billion parameters and a Flash model at 92 billion parameters, both supporting 512K context windows. Huawei claims task completion rates for complex requests above 90 percent and more than 15 percent performance gains over HarmonyOS 6.1, though those numbers have not yet been independently verified.
Spatial design and system-wide Huawei AI integration
Beyond its agent network, HarmonyOS 7 presents a refreshed spatial interface that lines up with the agentic AI story. The system uses software-based rendering to create three-dimensional, glass-like UI layers, with lock screens that respond to wallpapers and lighting effects that add depth and movement to buttons, sliders, and notifications. This spatial design pushes AI closer to the surface: system-level assistance appears in context, inside apps and panels, rather than as a separate overlay. Smarter photo editing, content generation, and natural-language controls are exposed through this refreshed interface, while the upgraded assistant can reach into a wider range of in-app commands. The result is Huawei AI integration that looks less like a single chatbot and more like a set of quiet, background agents tied to the visual layer. HarmonyOS 7’s animations and transitions are tuned to make these AI-driven state changes feel continuous rather than interruptive.
Anti-fraud protections and performance gains built into the core
Security is a second pillar of HarmonyOS 7’s agentic approach. The update introduces an anti-fraud platform that uses system-level intelligence to scan for suspicious QR codes, detect fraudulent or spoofed web pages, and flag apps that imitate legitimate services. AI-based voice scam detection listens for patterns linked to social engineering calls and can warn users when overseas spoofed numbers or scripted fraud attempts are likely involved. These protections run alongside the new agent framework instead of sitting in separate security apps, which means the OS can respond earlier in a possible scam chain. Huawei says HarmonyOS 7 improves general performance by more than 15 percent while keeping long-term system load growth under control, suggesting that the extra AI processing does not have to come at the cost of responsiveness, at least on supported flagship devices enrolled in the developer beta.
Timing, ecosystem momentum, and what it means for Apple
The timing of HarmonyOS 7’s debut is central to its strategic weight. Four days after Apple said its Siri AI upgrade would not be available in China, Huawei declared that “HarmonyOS enters the Agent era,” tying its release to the gap Apple left. HarmonyOS has already moved ahead of iOS in China’s smartphone OS market share, hitting 19 percent in Q1 2026 against iOS at 16 percent and Android at 65 percent, according to Counterpoint Research figures cited at HDC. HarmonyOS 7 currently sits in developer beta, supports a first wave of Huawei flagships, and is backed by more than 400,000 applications and services, many tuned for local regulations and consumer habits. While that ecosystem remains smaller than Apple’s App Store and Huawei’s international plans are still uncertain, the OS’s agent-native design gives it a home advantage in the one market where Apple’s latest AI capabilities are missing.
