Inside the Founding Team and Faraday’s Ambition

Inherent’s co-founders bring experience that spans cutting-edge AI research and high-level policy. Tantum Collins, Edward Hughes, and Louis Kirsch previously worked at DeepMind, while Kaloyan Aleksiev worked at Reka AI and Microsoft, giving the team direct experience with frontier AI systems and their limits inside large organisations. Collins also worked on AI policy at the White House under President Biden, exposing him to concerns about concentration of AI capabilities. Their first project, Faraday, is named after scientist Michael Faraday and is designed to pair human scientists with self-improving AI. Index Ventures partner Danny Rimmer describes Faraday as “a system designed to help humans and self-improving AI work together on genuine scientific discovery — not AI plugged into the same methods we've used for 400 years, but a reimagining of the scientific method from first principles.”

Inherent’s launch displays a broader shift in AI: senior researchers, once concentrated inside big tech labs, are increasingly starting independent ventures. These scientists seek control over research agendas, fewer short-term product demands, and governance structures that match the risks of advanced systems. An AI startup raises a large seed round only when investors believe it can set its own direction, and Inherent’s $50m seed round co-led by Index Ventures and Radical Ventures shows that backers see room for an alternative to centralised AI development. For researchers, independent AI labs can offer clearer focus on long-term scientific questions, while still accessing capital and compute through AI lab funding. This pattern echoes early biotech and internet eras, where experienced insiders left incumbents to define new research models rather than optimise existing product lines.

Its promise to “write the playbook for AI-native science” hints at new norms for how experiments are designed, validated, and shared when AI systems participate directly in discovery. Advisor Matt Clifford, co-founder of Entrepreneurs First and former government AI advisor, describes Inherent’s founders as some of the “most impressive, thoughtful founders” he has met, underscoring the expectation that this lab will help define best practice. If labs like Inherent succeed, they could balance big tech’s centralised AI development with a network of smaller, specialised research hubs. That would shift influence over research priorities, from closed corporate roadmaps toward independent AI research agendas that foreground scientific discovery, safety, and openness about methods—without giving up access to significant capital.
