OpenAI is applying additional restrictions in areas including self-harm, eating disorders, violence, dangerous activities, and sexual content. Parental Controls: Quiet Hours, Notifications, and Oversight
Parents have long needed better parental controls AI tools, not just device timers. With ChatGPT for teens, parents with linked teen accounts retain separate controls, including the ability to set Quiet Hours, manage selected settings, and receive notifications in limited high-risk situations. Is this a substitute for supervision? No—and it should not be. But it is more realistic than expecting parents to predict every possible conversation a teenager might have with a chatbot. In my view, these controls move responsibility upstream: the system itself carries some of the burden instead of leaving families to bolt on protections after the fact.
Using ChatGPT for Teens to Build AI Literacy, Not Dependence
The hidden opportunity here is teaching critical AI literacy. OpenAI has announced a partnership with CodeAI focused on helping students and educators understand how AI works and how to question, direct, and create with the technology. As CodeAI’s CEO Karim Meghji says, “Every student should know how AI actually works and be able to question the technology, catch its mistakes, and know when to stop trusting it.”
ChatGPT for teens is designed to support that mindset. It reinforces that it should not encourage emotional dependence, use romantic language, or imply that it has feelings or consciousness. That framing gives parents a starting point: AI is a tool to interrogate, not a friend to confide in.
