The important nuance is that this was an observational study, not proof that easy pace training alone caused longer life; gentle joggers may differ from sedentary people in many other habits. Still, the signal is clear: “a lot of the benefit of running shows up at a pace far gentler than most people push themselves to”. Traditional training folklore worships VO2 max, as if the highest oxygen‑uptake score automatically wins the race and guarantees health. Newer work on durability and physiological resilience tells a different story. In a recent study, thirty‑three recreational‑to‑competitive runners completed a long treadmill run near their first ventilatory threshold, book‑ended by tests of running economy, VO2 max, peak speed, thresholds, strength, jumping, fat oxidation, and maximal lactate production. The researchers then watched which metrics deteriorated. Higher VO2 max and faster threshold or peak speeds did help preserve ventilatory threshold and peak speed, but leg‑press strength correlated with smaller declines in running economy. This makes an over‑focus on peak VO2 naive. The runner who can hold form, efficiency, and pace late into a session is the one whose training choices will age well.
The Case for Making Easy Pace Your Default
For ordinary runners, parents, and time‑starved workers, the most radical training decision might be to slow down on purpose. Easy‑paced aerobic running builds the parts of fitness that respond to accumulated minutes: heart capacity, peripheral circulation, and the muscles’ ability to use fat as fuel. Low intensity running also lowers injury risk; “running hard all the time raises the load on tissues that need time to adapt, and injury is the main reason people stop running altogether”. A slower pace is easier to recover from, so you can run more often and keep doing it for years.
