The Steam Machine 4K performance controversy centers on Valve originally advertising the compact PC as capable of 4K gaming at 60fps with FSR, then quietly revising that promise to a more cautious claim of “up to 4K gaming with FSR 4.1” after launch-time testing and criticism exposed the limits of its hardware and upscaling-assisted real-world performance.
Valve has updated the Steam Machine store page so it no longer claims 4K/60fps performance, instead describing the device as offering “up to 4K gaming with FSR 4.1.” This came only after reviewers questioned whether the semi-custom RDNA 3 GPU could hit that target without severe compromises, with early analysis showing that the system’s baseline performance often fell below that of a PlayStation 5. In other words, the headline promise was technically possible in a lab, but not in a way most players would accept in their living room.

When 4K/60fps Means Basement-Settings Gaming
Valve’s retreat from a hard 4K/60fps guarantee is less a surprise than an overdue admission that numbers without context mislead. Performance analysis showed that while Steam Machine could reach 4K/60 with FSR in some titles, it often had to run at absolute minimum settings to do it, making games “look hideous” and undermining the point of premium hardware. Worse, some demanding games, including Death Stranding 2, could not reach 60fps at 4K at all, even with FSR in play.

FSR 4.1: Smart Workaround, Not Magic Wand
The revised “up to 4K” line does more than soften expectations; it quietly puts AMD’s latest FSR 4 upscaling at the center of Valve’s story. The updated page explicitly highlights “FSR 4.1,” the first time Valve has publicly confirmed the standard, and notes that it offers far better image quality than FSR 3.1 on RDNA 3 GPUs. According to one review, “our testing shows detail and clarity have been further improved, though it's not quite on the same level as Nvidia's DLSS.”
That emphasis is no accident. The semi-custom RDNA 3 GPU “would have to rely very heavily on upscaling” to approach 4K targets, and Valve’s launch timing coincided with new AMD drivers that finally made FSR 4.1 viable on that hardware. FSR 4 upscaling is the bridge between Steam Machine’s gaming PC specs and the marketing story, but a bridge is not a replacement for raw horsepower. Upscaling can smooth over gaps; it cannot erase a fundamentally restrictive design.
A Safer Claim—and a Better Deal for Players
Valve’s language shift from “4K gaming at 60fps with FSR” to “up to 4K gaming with FSR 4.1” makes its Steam Machine pitch both safer and more honest. As one analysis put it, changing the statement to “up to 4K” makes the claim a lot safer and more accurately describes the system’s capabilities, sparing Valve from broad performance promises that do not survive contact with real games.
This change matters for anyone weighing Steam Machine against traditional consoles. The Linux-based PC has already drawn attention for being outperformed by an aging PS5, and the original marketing only fueled unrealistic comparisons.
