Why the Mercedes-AMG GT 53 Is the Sweet Spot

The Mercedes-AMG GT 53 4-Door Coupé is a dual motor EV performance sedan that trades extreme horsepower for long-distance usability, pairing over 500 miles of WLTP range with serious acceleration, ultra-fast charging and authentic AMG character to create an electric performance coupe that makes more sense for most real-world buyers than the harder-core tri-motor variants. For most people, this is the version to buy. It delivers 536–544 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque from two motors, one on each axle, giving all-wheel-drive traction and a 0–60 mph sprint in 3.4–3.8 seconds. You keep the flagship 106-kWh battery, 800-volt architecture and 600 kW DC charging that takes you from 10–80% in 11 minutes, but you gain a WLTP range of about 503 miles instead of the shorter figure of the top GT 63. If you want an electric AMG that can do grand touring, commuting and spirited drives without constant charging stops, the GT 53 is the clear recommendation.

Power vs. Range: GT 53 Against GT 55 and GT 63

The electric AMG GT 4-Door Coupé line now spans GT 53, GT 55 and GT 63 trims, and the GT 53 deliberately sits below the others on raw output. With its dual-motor layout, the GT 53 delivers 536–544 hp and 590 lb-ft, while the tri-motor GT 55 steps up to 805 hp and 1,328 lb-ft and the GT 63 goes all the way to 1,153 hp and 1,475 lb-ft. The result is clear: the GT 63 reaches 62 mph in as little as 2.1 seconds with rollout, where the GT 53 needs 3.4 seconds to hit 60 mph. However, that extra motor and power cost you range. The GT 53 is expected to reach up to 503 miles (809 km) WLTP, compared with up to 432 miles (696 km) for the GT 63 on the same 106-kWh battery. If you spend more time on long trips than on drag strips, the GT 53’s balance of pace and 500 mile range is better matched to daily life than the extreme GT 63.

Driving Experience: Dual-Motor AWD and Inline-6 Sound

Despite being the entry-level trim, the Mercedes-AMG GT 53 is not a watered-down appliance; its dual-motor all-wheel drive and AMG-tuned hardware are aimed squarely at performance enthusiasts. The front motor acts primarily as a booster, engaging when extra traction or performance is needed, and can mechanically disconnect to let the car run as a rear-wheel-drive EV to improve efficiency and feel. The rear motor drives through a two-speed transmission, with a short first gear for punchy acceleration and a tall second for high-speed efficiency. Suspension is AMG Ride Control with air springs and adaptive damping, offering Comfort, Sport and Sport+ modes so you can switch between relaxed cruising and firm, controlled handling. In AMGFORCE Sport+ mode, the GT 53 simulates an inline-6 combustion soundtrack based on recordings of the turbocharged and supercharged 3.0-litre AMG E53 engine, paired with simulated gearshifts via paddles to add drama when you want it.

Range, Charging and Everyday Usability

The GT 53’s biggest advantage over the hotter trims is how well it handles distance and daily use. Its 106-kWh battery uses directly cooled cylindrical cells on an 800-volt architecture, allowing repeated fast charging and spirited driving without needing long pauses. Maximum WLTP range is quoted at 809 km, or about 503 miles, and Mercedes says a 10-minute DC fast charge can add up to 534 km, making range anxiety much less of a concern than in many electric performance cars. DC charging peaks at 600 kW, taking the battery from 10–80% in 11 minutes, while AC charging tops out at 11 kW. Active aerodynamics, including a rear spoiler that adjusts with speed and an extending rear diffuser, help reduce drag and support that long-range figure. Inside, you get the same core cabin as the higher trims, with a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster and 14-inch central screen plus configurable AMG Set-Up. For commuting, road trips and occasional track days, the GT 53 is the most rounded package.

Buy if / Skip if

  • Buy the Mercedes-AMG GT 53 if you want an electric performance coupe that balances strong dual-motor acceleration with over 500 miles of WLTP range and ultra-fast charging.
  • Skip the Mercedes-AMG GT 53 if your priority is the most extreme AMG acceleration and track-focused chassis hardware available, and you are willing to sacrifice range for the GT 63’s tri-motor 1,153 hp output.
  • Buy the Mercedes-AMG GT 53 if you value long-distance comfort, AMG Ride Control air suspension and an inline-6 sound simulation that adds character without needing a real engine.
  • Skip the Mercedes-AMG GT 53 if you rarely drive long distances and prefer the more dramatic V8-style sound profiles and higher-output performance of the GT 55 or GT 63.
  • Buy the Mercedes-AMG GT 53 if you want the most affordable entry point into the electric AMG GT 4-Door Coupé lineup without losing the flagship battery, 800-volt architecture or 600 kW DC fast charging.
