How View-Once Text Works on iPhone and Android
On Android and now on iPhone, WhatsApp view-once messages sit alongside existing disappearing text messages but behave differently. Disappearing messages use a countdown timer; they remain visible for a set period, such as 24 hours or several days, whether they are opened or not. View-once text messages remain in a locked state until they are opened, then delete themselves instantly once read. On iOS, WABetaInfo reports that you type a message as usual, then long-press the send button to open a menu and select “Send as view once.” The message arrives with a special badge, indicating its one-time nature. When the recipient leaves the chat or navigates away, the content becomes inaccessible. This keeps everyday conversations intact while treating specific texts as one-off, disposable secrets that do not clutter long-term history.
Stronger In-App Privacy: No Copying, Forwarding, or Screenshots
Meta is extending the same digital protections used for view-once photos and videos to view-once text messages, strengthening WhatsApp privacy features for sensitive chats. According to WABetaInfo, the recipient cannot highlight or copy the content, and the forward arrow is disabled for any view-once bubble. On iPhone, attempts to capture the message with screenshots or screen recordings are blocked, often showing a black screen instead of the text. These limits make it harder to duplicate the content inside WhatsApp, which is important for confidential information or one-off secrets. However, no system can completely prevent physical workarounds, such as photographing the screen with another device. The feature is therefore best seen as a strong in-app safeguard, not an absolute guarantee, giving users more control over how long their words remain visible and where they can spread.
How View-Once Text Fits with Other Disappearing Options
View-once text messages do not replace WhatsApp’s existing disappearing messages; they complement them. Disappearing messages are useful for conversations that should gradually clear out, such as group chats that auto-delete after a day or a week. View-once text is aimed at ultra-short-lived information: one-time passwords, Wi-Fi credentials, temporary addresses, payment details, access codes, or instructions that only need to be seen once. It is expected to work in both individual and group chats, though Channels are not part of the rollout. Together with Chat Lock, view-once media, and timers for chat history, the new option tightens WhatsApp privacy features into a more flexible system. Users can decide whether a message should persist for hours, days, or a single read, matching a wider trend toward stronger privacy controls and self-deleting messages on iPhone and Android alike.
