What Director Plus Is and Why It Matters
Magewell Director Plus is a portable, all-in-one 4K production and presentation system that combines multi-camera switching, IP video ingest, recording, streaming, and on-screen graphics in a single compact device for field, studio, and corporate use. As the third model in Magewell’s Director product line, Director Plus builds on earlier versions with higher signal counts and more flexible connectivity. It supports 4K/60fps recording and streaming while integrating production tools such as compositing, telestration, and instant replay. That blend targets creators who need studio-quality output in places where traditional control rooms are not possible: on-location shoots, mobile live event production, pop-up venues, and improvised remote presentation spaces. By packing end-to-end workflow functions into one unit, Director Plus aims to reduce the need for racks of field production equipment and simplifies setup for both technical teams and smaller in-house AV crews.
Expanded Inputs: HDMI, USB and “Any Source, Anywhere” IP
Director Plus centers on input flexibility, reflecting Magewell’s “any source, anywhere” mantra. The unit provides four HDMI inputs for cameras, laptops, or switchers, plus two USB inputs for webcams or other USB video sources. On the IP side, it can ingest up to ten live network streams, including SRT, RTMP, RTSP, NDI High Bandwidth, and NDI HX3, alongside HTML web pages, file-based media, and mobile camera feeds. According to Magewell, Director Plus can combine up to six 4K/60 sources at once—two HDMI, one USB, and three IP—or up to 16 1080p60 sources made up of four HDMI, two USB, and ten IP feeds. For output, the device offers two HDMI ports and one USB-C interface and can also send NDI HX3 and conventional streaming formats, bridging AV hardware workflows and IP-first infrastructures in one box.
Portable 4K Production for Field and Live Event Work
The design of Director Plus is tuned for portable 4K production where crews cannot rely on fixed infrastructure. A built-in 7-inch touchscreen gives operators a self-contained control surface for switching, monitoring, and triggering media without external panels. The free Director Utility mobile app extends control to phones or tablets, while plugins and API integration make it easier to fit the system into larger AV or broadcast setups. Instant replay and telestration appeal to sports and training environments, while scene compositing and media playback suit worship services, podcasts, education, and enterprise communications. Director Plus can run high source counts for colorful live event production—think multi-camera conferences, concerts, and town halls—without extra routing hardware. This makes it attractive for rental and staging firms and in-house teams that need field production equipment capable of broadcast-grade 4K results from a single, portable hub.
5G-Ready Connectivity for Remote and Low-Bandwidth Venues
Network connectivity is central to how Director Plus supports mobile and remote use cases. The system includes an integrated 5G modem and 2.5 Gbps Ethernet, and it can aggregate 5G cellular, Wi-Fi, and wired connections to improve streaming reliability. That matters for live event production and remote presentations from venues with unpredictable internet, where multiple contribution feeds and outbound streams must stay stable. Director Plus is designed to receive and transmit several network streams at once, so it can serve as both a contribution encoder and a local production switcher. Magewell highlights that this performance is aimed at content creators who want flexibility without giving up quality; as Amy Zhou, Sales Director at Magewell, states, Director Plus delivers high signal counts and quality while maintaining the reliability and ease of use that the company’s products are known for.
Blending Production and Presentation in One Compact System
Beyond classic switching, Director Plus blurs the line between video production and live presentation tools. Its ability to composite multiple sources, overlay HTML web pages, and play back file-based media assets lets operators build full presentation layouts—slides, picture-in-picture camera feeds, and branded graphics—directly on the device. That reduces dependence on separate media servers or slide systems, especially for corporate communications, medical demonstrations, and classroom or training environments. Because Director Plus supports both HDMI and IP sources, it can pull in local devices on stage and remote contributors over the network in the same program. For AV teams tasked with hybrid events, webinars, or recorded sessions, this all-in-one production system concentrates control, monitoring, and output in one footprint, streamlining workflows from capture through delivery while keeping the rig compact enough for easy transport between locations.
