Connecting Screening to Real Reading Intervention Tools

Screeners alone do not teach a teenager how to write that missing sentence, and educators should treat any assessment—AI-powered or not—as a means, not an end. The promise here lies in connection. McGraw Hill says ROAR will sit alongside core English language arts curricula—Emerge!, Summit!, Soar! and ¡Emerger juntos!—plus supplemental and intervention products. The intended model links screening, curriculum, and intervention so that when data reveals a decoding or vocabulary gap, teachers can direct students into specific support rather than vague remediation. ROAR’s Foundational Reading Skills Suite has also been validated for dyslexia screening, widening its use as an early literacy screening tool for students whose difficulties often go unnoticed until frustration explodes in upper grades. Used well, these systems do not replace handwriting samples, oral reading, or teacher judgment; they give educators sharper maps of where students are and where instruction should go next.

Opinion: Use AI as a Flashlight, Not a Crutch

The heartbreaking moment when seniors cannot complete four scaffolded words should haunt every policy discussion. It proves that waiting for final exams or college essays to reveal literacy gaps is both cruel and ineffective. Broad, research-backed screeners like ROAR, approved for use in states such as California, Kentucky, Minnesota and Ohio, offer schools a way to see problems earlier and more clearly. But they are only as good as the human decisions that follow. If districts use AI-powered literacy tools to excuse less writing practice, fewer oral explanations, or weaker relationships, they will worsen the very crisis they aim to solve. The smart path is to treat AI literacy assessment as a flashlight: illuminating hidden needs, guiding targeted teaching, and amplifying the craft of educators who already know that reading is a human right.
