The GeForce Control Panel retirement is Nvidia’s move to stop developing its 20-year-old settings utility and consolidate GPU driver settings, display controls, and gaming tools into the newer Nvidia App instead. For more than two decades, the Control Panel has been where PC gamers managed resolution, refresh rates, G-Sync, 3D options, and multi-display layouts. Nvidia is now declaring it “officially retiring for Game Ready and Studio Drivers” as all actively supported features for GeForce users migrate into the Nvidia App. The legacy tool will no longer receive new features, improvements, or security fixes, and it will not be automatically installed with fresh driver setups. However, existing installations can remain in place, and you can still download the old app from the Microsoft Store if you depend on it during the transition.
Why Nvidia Is Moving Everything to the Nvidia App
Nvidia has spent the last few years modernising its PC gaming software stack, replacing both GeForce Experience and the GeForce Control Panel with a single Nvidia App. According to PC Guide, the app “combines everything into one cleaner interface,” bringing together driver updates, GPU driver settings, game optimisation, performance monitoring, recording tools, and in-game overlays. XDA notes that with the GeForce GRD 610.47 driver, “all actively supported NVIDIA Control Panel features for GeForce users” have been added to the Nvidia App, making the legacy software redundant for most gamers. The goal is to reduce clutter and confusion by giving players one consistent place to manage drivers and graphics features, instead of juggling two separate applications with overlapping options and different user interfaces.
What Changes for Gamers After the Switch
The most visible change arrives when you install the latest Game Ready or Studio driver using a clean installation. After that, the familiar “Nvidia Control Panel” shortcut in your desktop right-click menu will no longer appear; you will be directed to the Nvidia App for GPU management instead. Existing systems that already have the Control Panel installed will keep it, unless you perform a clean driver install that removes old components. Nvidia will also stop bundling the legacy app in new driver packages, so new PCs and fresh Windows installs will only get the Nvidia App by default. While you can still grab the Control Panel from the Microsoft Store or other sources, Nvidia has made clear that all future work for consumer features will focus on the Nvidia App replacement.

For GeForce users, Nvidia says all “actively supported” Control Panel functions have been ported to the Nvidia App, including key GPU driver settings, display controls, and 3D options. PC Guide highlights that the app now handles resolution changes, refresh rate adjustments, G-Sync toggles, multiple-display configuration, and core GPU features, while also adding extras like recording, overlays, and performance monitoring. However, Glitched reports that some advanced Pro-category features have not yet moved over, which is why Nvidia RTX PRO users will continue to receive Control Panel support for now. If you rely on specialised professional options, you may still need the old interface until Nvidia completes the migration of those Pro features into the new client.
How to Safely Transition Your Settings
For most PC gamers, the best path forward is to install the latest Game Ready or Studio driver and start using the Nvidia App as the primary hub for PC gaming software. Before performing a clean installation, note any custom Control Panel tweaks you rely on—such as specific 3D profiles or display configurations—then recreate them inside the Nvidia App once the update is complete. If you discover a missing Pro-level option, you can still keep or reinstall the GeForce Control Panel from the Microsoft Store while Nvidia finishes migrating those features. Nvidia and XDA both recommend moving sooner rather than later, as the old Control Panel will no longer receive security updates, bug fixes, or new capabilities going forward.
