Chrome 150 ad blocker changes refer to Google’s decision to remove the last remaining technical workaround that allowed older, more powerful Manifest V2 ad-blocking extensions, such as the classic uBlock Origin, to keep working in Chrome despite the browser’s migration to the more restricted Manifest V3 system. From June 30, Chrome 150 removes the ExtensionManifestV2Disabled flag, described by a Google engineer as dead code now that Manifest V2 is no longer supported. That flag was the last escape hatch for users who knew how to enable experimental Chrome flags to keep running MV2-based tools. For the roughly 40 million people still using full uBlock Origin in Chrome, this means the original extension will stop functioning entirely in Google’s browser, closing a chapter on a long-running ad blocker workaround.
From Manifest V2 to Manifest V3: Why It Matters
Google has been moving Chrome extensions from Manifest V2 (MV2) to Manifest V3 (MV3) for several years, presenting the change as a security and performance upgrade. Under MV2, extensions such as uBlock Origin could intercept and cancel network requests in real time, which made blocking ads and trackers highly effective. MV3 replaces that with a declarative rules system: extensions submit rule lists to Chrome, and the browser decides what to block based on allowed rule types and limits. That shift reduces the flexibility ad blockers had to respond to new tracking tricks. A Chromium contributor cited accumulating MV2-specific security bugs as part of the reason to strip out the old code. According to MobileSyrup, Google even started auto-disabling MV2 extensions for Chrome users in 2024, making this latest move the end of a long, gradual enforcement process.
uBlock Origin vs. uBlock Origin Lite Under Manifest V3
With Chrome 150, the original uBlock Origin no longer runs in Chrome; users are steered to the Manifest V3 uBlock Origin Lite instead. Lite is a real ad blocker and can remove most standard display ads out of the box, but it works very differently. The MV2 version relied on dynamic filtering, cancelling unwanted requests as they happened. Under MV3, Lite must hand Chrome a static set of rules, and Google controls how many rules and which types are allowed. Features such as dynamic filtering, comprehensive cosmetic filtering, and many anti–ad-block bypass techniques are gone or reduced. The developer, Raymond Hill, has estimated a 30 to 40 percent drop in blocking effectiveness due to MV3 limits, though impact varies by site. Users can improve Lite somewhat by adding more filter lists through its setup guide, but it does not match the original.
Ripple Effects for Chromium Browsers and Built‑In Blockers
Because many browsers are built on open-source Chromium, Chrome 150’s ad blocker workaround removal will not stay confined to Google’s own browser. MobileSyrup reports that Chromium version 151 will strip remaining MV2-related flags, and Microsoft Edge is expected to follow Chrome’s path on removing Manifest V2 support. Opera has signalled a gradual phase-out of MV2 as well, even as it continues limited support for now. That leaves Chromium-based browsers that rely on the extension system with the same Manifest V3 boundaries as Chrome. Some vendors sidestep this by building ad blocking directly into the browser. Brave, for example, uses its Shields system at the browser level, outside the MV3 extension framework, so Chrome’s extension rules do not apply to it. Other browsers like Vivaldi and Opera also offer built-in blocking that is not subject to MV3’s extension limits.
Your Options Now: Stay, Switch Extensions, or Change Browser
For anyone relying on a Chrome 150 ad blocker, the choice is now strategic. One option is to stay with Chrome and move to Manifest V3 tools such as uBlock Origin Lite, accepting weaker blocking but keeping existing workflows and sync. For casual browsing, Lite will still remove most obvious ads, though some trackers and anti-block scripts will slip through more often. A second option is to switch browsers while keeping the full extension. Firefox continues to support Manifest V2 alongside V3, so the original uBlock Origin works there as before. Brave heads another direction with its Shields system providing built-in protection without extensions. According to DigitBin, “Firefox still supports the full extension without restriction,” while Brave’s design keeps it outside Chrome’s extension rules. For users who care most about strong blocking, changing browsers may be more effective than changing extensions.
