A mini PC that thinks like a workstation, not a toy
The Minisforum MS-03 mini PC is a compact workstation built around Intel’s Panther Lake Core Ultra 9 386H processor, up to 128GB of DDR5 memory and multi-10 gigabit ethernet networking, targeting professionals who need desktop-class performance, storage and connectivity in a denser, more flexible form factor than a traditional tower can offer.
Minisforum has been circling this idea for a while, but the MS-03 is where the concept finally lands with intent. Inside the 195mm-class chassis sits Intel’s Panther Lake Core Ultra 9 386H, a 16-core, 16-thread chip with up to 4.9 GHz turbo and an 80W power limit in balanced mode. That is workstation silicon, not an afterthought mobile part. Paired with two SO-DIMM slots supporting up to 128GB of DDR5-7200, this DDR5 mini PC stops pretending to be a living-room box and starts competing with entry tower workstations on raw compute and memory headroom.
The move is deliberate: Minisforum says the MS-03 is designed as an edge workstation for enterprise IT and local AI, where running large models on-site matters more than shaving every watt or millimeter. In other words, it trades a bit of “tiny” for a lot of “serious”.

Panther Lake and DDR5 scaling: why the MS-03 punches above its size
The real story here is not that the MS-03 uses a Panther Lake processor, but how aggressively Minisforum is tuning it. In balanced mode, the Core Ultra 9 386H is allowed up to 80W, which is closer to a desktop CPU power budget than the typical mini PC envelope. That gives its 16 cores room to sustain higher clocks under multi-threaded loads, which matters for rendering, software development and data processing more than synthetic benchmark bragging rights.
Equally important is memory scaling. Many compact PCs choke at 64GB; the MS-03 pushes to 128GB of DDR5 at up to 7200 MT/s across two SO-DIMM slots. For video editors with heavy timelines, 3D artists juggling large scenes or data scientists running multiple containers, this is the difference between a responsive workstation and a swapping mess. Minisforum explicitly calls out local AI: the NPU delivers 50 TOPS while the integrated GPU adds another 40 TOPS, and the company claims it can run the Gemma 4–26B model at about 22 tokens per second. That is not data-center class, but for on-prem inference in a small office, it is compelling.
If you see the MS-03 as a tiny gaming rig, you will miss the point. It is a CPU-and-memory workhorse in a compact shell, optimised for concurrency and model size rather than flashy integrated graphics.

10GbE everywhere: built for real networked workflows, not home Wi-Fi
Where the Minisforum MS-03 mini PC decisively leaves most compact boxes behind is networking. The rear panel carries dual 10GbE SFP+ fiber ports driven by an Intel X710 controller, a 10GbE RJ-45 copper port, plus a 2.5GbE RJ-45. That is an absurd amount of wired bandwidth for a chassis this small, and it is precisely what creative teams and data-heavy shops have been missing in the mini PC space.
If you are cutting 8K footage off a shared NAS, training models against a central dataset or hosting containers for edge services, 1GbE is a tax on your time. Dual 10 gigabit ethernet links allow the MS-03 to sit directly on fiber switches, separate storage and client traffic, or act as a compact gateway between fast back-end networks and more modest front-end infrastructure. Even if you do not need that on day one, the capacity is there as your environment grows.
Wireless is no afterthought either: Intel’s BE211 module brings Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, which is useful for flexible desk layouts where stringing fiber and copper to every position is not realistic. But the design message is clear: this machine expects to live on serious wired networks, not under a TV on consumer Wi-Fi.
Storage and PCIe expansion: where this compact box outgrows fanless rivals
The MS-03’s storage layout quietly reveals its workstation ambitions. Three M.2 NVMe slots live on the board; two run at PCIe 5.0 speeds and one at PCIe 4.0. Minisforum even includes an M.2-to-U.2 adapter so you can drop in 7mm U.2 enterprise SSDs up to 15TB for high-endurance, high-capacity workloads. Add that up and you are looking at a mini PC that can realistically host OS, cache, scratch and project volumes with room to spare, rather than forcing compromises on a single drive.
Then there is PCIe. Unlike fanless, sealed competitors, the MS-03 reserves space for a physical PCIe x16 slot wired as PCIe 4.0 x4 for half-height cards. Internally, it supports a low-profile discrete GPU up to 75W over as many as eight PCIe lanes, giving you the option to add CUDA or stronger graphics without resorting to external enclosures. You trade silence for expansion, with cooling handled by a three-heatpipe heatsink and a single fan that hits about 38 dB under full load in balanced mode.
This is the structural difference: the MS-03 treats PCIe as a first-class feature, not a luxury. If you need capture cards, networking cards or a modest GPU inside a compact workstation, this box allows it, while fanless designs strand you on integrated silicon forever.
Is the MS-03 the new default compact workstation?
Taken together, the Minisforum MS-03 mini PC looks less like a typical small-form-factor curiosity and more like a credible alternative to a mid-tier tower workstation. It couples a Panther Lake Core Ultra 9 386H, 128GB DDR5 support, triple NVMe (plus U.2) storage and wall-to-wall 10 gigabit ethernet into a 196 x 189 x 48mm chassis without giving up PCIe expansion for discrete GPUs or other cards.
It is not finished business: pre-orders open globally on July 23, but Minisforum has yet to share pricing, and earlier comments suggest this entry in its workstation line will not be cheap. Still, for creative professionals, IT teams and AI practitioners tired of choosing between underpowered mini PCs and bulky towers, the MS-03 sends a clear signal. The compact workstation no longer has to mean sealed, soldered and network-starved. It can be small, fast and expandable at the same time—and that should put pressure on every other mini PC maker to catch up.
